Job and General Employment Thread

Postby Kicksave » Sat Apr 20, 2019 6:03 pm

Last month, I had a disagreement with a senior manager. I refused to do something that was questionable and if I would have got caught, it could have jeopardized my career in the future with corporate. It was the difference between my manager getting his bonus or not. At the time, I didn't know this but I still wouldn't have done what he wanted me to do as it was fraud.

With 3 days left in the month last month, I was told that they were going in a different direction. I was eligible for transfer but I'd have to find a spot within the organization in the last 3 days of the month which is damn near impossible otherwise I would be terminated. He strategically did it on the 27th instead of the last day of the month so that he didn't have to pay my $6k+ bonus for that month.

So, for the first time in forever, I've not had a job. I didn't realize how unhappy I was at work until I got away from it for a few weeks. After the shock of everything wore off and things settled and I was able to budget the emergency fund. I have been working 55-60+ hour weeks and nights and Saturdays for the last few years that I forgot how nice it has been to actually be home for weekends and nights.

I got a gig lined up that won't be as much money but I'll work for a national company, traveling and be getting out of sales which will be nice. It's been tough trying to transition out of sales after getting used to the money I was making but now is a good time. It will be software consultative role in the same industry so it will be a smooth transition.

Maybe I can have some more time to post on here. :pop:

Glad you are doing well.

Many times in life when the house burns down you get a sense of what is actually of value.

Got my offer. 75% increase and starting out with 4 weeks PTO.

I’ll now make more than what my wife and I make combined currently. Woot woot!

Greener pastures. Couldn’t take the bureaucracy or stupidity of the SESs of my agency anymore. They are moving positions left and right. Who knows when they might transfer me or others to another location. So I am done.

Do your thing and come back as an SES, show them how it's done. ;)

Probably not, your new pay is probaly pushing that level already and the work environment is better. Happy for you.

Hell to the no on ever coming back as an SES. If I am going to have that much stress I’d rather be paid well. Haha.

I'm not sure if there's a good answer to this, but my wife's director wants to create a management position for her where she'll manage a team of 3-4 others. She's currently the team lead, so one step below this position. She needs to include salary requirements, and I honestly have no idea where to even start. I generally ask for my longshot salary, since it's nearly always negotiable, but the ranges at her work are absurd. This position could have a range from $80k-$160k.

Any guidance as to how to estimate what her ask should be? Like, say, 10% above her current salary given the added responsibilities? There's zero chance that she's going to shed most of her current technical work.
Update: Mrs. NTP asked for 20% more than her current salary for this management position. They finally offered the position to her before Easter - at 4% more than her current salary. She immediately told them to go back to the drawing board and find some more cash. Today, they called her and bumped that offer by ~$400. I'd have thanked them for their interest and went back to work, but she deferred an answer until tomorrow. She's going to speak to her boss about this, but I've already told her that I'd pass on the job at that salary. It's a lowball offer, and that second offer of $400 is nothing short of an insult, IMO. She thinks that if she doesn't take it, they'll hold it against her, etc. They're trying to shuffle around a few other positions that rely on this (making one current manager a team lead - read: demotion - which would essentially be my wife's current team lead position).

I'm not going to force her hand here, but I do hope that she ultimately turns down the job.

The title won't benefit her career significantly?

(Note, just in case it's touchy, I am not at odds with what you're saying...just asking the question)
