Job and General Employment Thread

Postby NTP66 » Tue Aug 16, 2022 10:20 am

Just had my annual review, and my supervisor - a good friend of mine - spent the last 5-10 minutes thanking me for sticking through all of the nonsense that our team has had to endure over the last year or so, etc. I feel so guilty and awful right now.
Did you get an offer from the other job?
No, haven't even interviewed yet (they're waiting to meet a diversity quota first), but was basically told it was mine to lose. The hiring Director is also my former manager.
Were you friends before working for them? Even still, just feeling like that shows you're way more loyal to them than they would be to you if you were deemed replaceable/redundant.
We were not, but we've become close since starting working with each other. I know he wouldn't hold it against me for leaving, as that's not the kind of person he is, I just feel bad is all.

Yeah that's what I mean when I say you're more loyal than they would be to you. Don't feel too bad. You have to look out for number 1. He would do the same if it came to it. I've seen way too many loyal employees fired at year 10, 20, hell even 30, without so much as a heads up. In the words of FHCMT, dey pretend to care, but I know dey don care.

Oh yeah, I only feel bad about possibly leaving him behind to deal with the mess. My manager and the rest of leadership? Not one second of guilt.

Just saw a tik-tok about it. From the POV of an HR person and they were truly questioning why people would do this. There's a litany of reasons why people are tired of going above and beyond, mostly because the chase to do so isn't worth it anymore.

Dumb. My ass is out the door at 3pm, and anything that happens afterwards is overtime.

On the surface I think it's a combo of:

1. The expectation at this point (due to retirements, shortages, whatever) for the average worker is to work an extra 50-100% of their listed job duties for the price of one and an atta boy. They were originally told it would be temporary, but then when results didn't drop with increased workload, it was made permanent without pay increase.

2. The average worker is getting burned out by a system that attempts to prioritize job over life.

Combo those with COL increasing and the pay remaining stagnant, you're going to get a lot of people not wanting the stress of it all.

I do my job and do it well. Sometimes emergencies come up and they get handled. Outside of that when I am done with my work day I am done. I don't look at emails, I don't look at slack etc.

My boss knows if there is some huge issue after hours I'll be the first to try and help if I can. He also respects my work/life balance and knows I (and my team) get **** done...so there is no expectation of crazy hours.

Yea, I am sliding more into the - I'm not getting a promotion any time soon, and am already getting good remarks, so why take on more? To just do more work?

I'm also burned out with a job, but it's more "man I have another 10-20 more years of this ****" burn out.

It's a generational thing as well. I had a boomer rant on me a few years ago about how nobody is loyal to their company anymore. It works both ways, lady.

I have a very similar issue with my team right now.

The primary duty of my job is to ready our environment for an accreditation that happens on a three-year cycle. Last year that accreditation came up and we had zero deficiencies. Just doing the accreditation usually gets us a bonus, even if we don't ace it. My supervisor did submit us for a cash award but because of leadership turnover at the director level (my new boss just didn't bothering approving the packages, basically), the packages were never finalized. No award, even after we asked about it a year later.

So, yeah, now we're two years out from that accreditation again. I'm not feeling as motivated to do as well this time, I'd be okay with any passing score.

Just heard today that all our 3D models for all our parts have been lost. We're talking 10's of thousands of models, not to mention shortcuts and undocumented files just blown away by IT. Some of these models took months to complete - this will end up being an epic disaster if they can't recover the files.

I'm not an IT person, but the term I heard was bare-metal deletion of the server or something like that. I think we are screwed.

Wow. If true that's almost certainly intentional. Ouch.

It's hard to believe someone in IT would be that dumb, unless it was intentional.

It was intentional, but unintentionally stupid to not ensure the backup was a valid backup. We got hit with a virus a couple months ago and they were restoring a supposed backup of the server. Didn't bother checking or backing up the affected server.

meow: “Yeah. I’m taking my youngest to kindergarten. You’ll have to find another open slot. Try next Tuesday. There are a few available spots.”
d-bag: “I’m forwarding you a planner for 8:00. It will be great if you can join.”
meow: “you can send it but I ain’t coming…”
d-bag: “if you get done with your child early, please join”
meow: “you don’t have kids, do you, d-bag?”

Put into another rough spot regarding pay this week. One position open, one position filled. The posting that opens up is a level higher than the filled position but functionally are relied upon the same.

I now get to do the dance of, we really should have the filled position upleveled, or I'm going to be filling one and losing another ramba.
