A few of us will get together for a happy hour or something after work, but none of us care that we don’t see each other in person day to day.

All of us have families, and have really embraced being around them much more as a result of this.

Our AVC invited me to grab beers one night.

It's still really weird to be in a department where everyone is... friendly? Normal?

Most of my best friends are people I or Mrs Tif have worked with over the years, and/or their spouses.

I worked in a family business for the first ten years out of college, so I kind of had to hang out with those people outside of work.

I don't really like hanging out with people at my current job (since 2007). I'm friendly with people at work, both in my immediate department and across campus, but I don't want to do anything outside of work. My previous boss always had a Christmas party at her house for our department, and that was the first thing I nixed when I moved into her position when she retired in 2016. No way I'm hosting **** at my house.

Really not looking forward to awkward dinner invites at my new job, either. But as I'm down there alone for the first few months, I'm sure I'll get asked. Ugh.

Most of my team is pretty tight, so happy hours are on the table - especially if our manager isn't included.

I got all of my remaining 25 days of unused vacation approved for cash out. Our staff handbook states that only 10 can be paid out after your last day of employment, but I made my last day 25 days after my last day on campus. Big brain move. I will serve as a "consultant" until the last day of paid leave. My supervisor said they will be closing that loophole lol.

I will be replaced, which was good news for my staff. I was very concerned that they wouldn't fill the position. The only issue is that it will no longer be a faculty/tenure-track position. That's not good, but very much the trend in higher education. Tenure makes it difficult to purge staff and faculty when there are economic downturns, changes in admin, and so on. It also makes it hard to attract candidates to rural SC to work here. Stupid decision, but IDGAF at this point.

Ironically (?), my new position is faculty, tenure track and I have no teaching responsibilities at all. Like I will never even see students other than walking around on campus. It's a professional courtesy, so I have the same standing as those teaching faculty.

Welp chalk another one up to the gr8 resignation (which is a stupid catch phrase). Ya boy the kangaroo just accepted an offer for a job with the same types of responsibilities only more complicated. Bigger employer by a long shot. Bigger paycheck by a long shot. It is a bit of a roll of the dice but you gotta do what you gotta do. Gonna suck to lose 7.5 years of institutional knowledge/goodwill/credibility, but as a wise man once said, get buy living or get busy dying.

First thing i did after i got off the phone was play some ice cube, because today was a good day..

We met with our new Citrix account and support reps today, and one of the guys asked us if we were allowed outside now, or if we were all in isolation at home. He then proceeded to ask if we could all meet in person in the city. In the past we’d probably be fine with that, but not a single one of us wants to ever have to go into Philly again, especially if it’s to meet up with this guy.

Well, sure. I'm sure most full time jobs have some paid leave. They just aren't required to have any. Got to keep the profit margins up, creating value for shareholders. It's the American way.

I'd have to go all the way back to working at Idlewild or maybe farm work that I did as a teenager to remember working somewhere that didn't offer any PTO. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. But there are so many different vocational scenarios across the US I'm okay with there being no blanket requirement for PTO.

I remember reading up on this a long time ago. You also aren't guaranteed a lunch break. The union where I work only gets a 10 minute lunch break.

I work for a company that has a quarter million employees, makes over $67 billion a year, and we get 9 paid holidays. I have accrued enough PTO through 4 months to take 2 days of vacation.

I agreed and accepted those terms of employment, because the other benefits are pretty great. But in comparison to other countries, it's kinda silly.
