The cat does not save the day. In fact, the cat almost gets the protagonist killed. It actually does get one crewmember killed.

Sure, I'm using DEM loosely here. But the 'doesn't adhere to the stories internal logic' is the part for me. You don't even see that cat except for a fleeting glimpse at breakfast until some plot needs to be driven.
