Is there a candy you associate with Christmas experiences/memories?

Postby tifosi77 » Tue Dec 15, 2015 4:45 pm

Walking into the basement when I was about 6 and seeing my oldest brother put together a bike....Boom, Santa was dead to me.
My coworker just said that she told her six-year old son that there was no Santa because he was fussing over going to McDonald's instead of to the hot dog place. That's............. intense.

When I was about eight or nine, the first time I was given a sack of these I didn't realize they were foil wrapped and that you had to unwrap them to eat them:

I just bit into it straight away. It's any wonder I'm still alive, really.

My grandparents used to have these every year:

I forgot about them until my sister got some for Christmas a couple years ago.

Not candy, but cookies. I'm not a cookie guy but Christmas cookies are delicious.

We make pizzelles. Not the thick, cakey kind. Wafer thin, made with anisette liquor.

My grandma made peanut butter fudge that tasted like heaven.

My grandfather taught me numerous things growing up. He always had time for me when my parents didn't (one of six kids). He had me doing 4th grade math before I started kindergarten, taught me to tie my shoes, ride a bike, and of course the ways of the Price is Right. He always had these around, and every time I see them, I think of him.

We get these from my wifes great aunts. They're twins, and ~83 this year.

What is a pizzelles? For Christmas liquor cookies, those bourbon soaked cookies that no one sells, are great.

Almond bark. It was basically like a giant Hershey Almond bar but broken up into bigger bricks or pieces. Couldn't remember for the life of me where we got it from and I haven't had it in a number of years. Only reason I remembered it was that I was watching one of those Food Network 'how it's made' shows about peppermint bark and it made me wonder what happened to that other bark.

Hershey variety pack. Hershey's Milk Chocolate, Special Dark, Krackel, and Mr. Goodbar. My grandma still always brings a bag with her around the holidays.

I miss actual cold weather for Christmas. Forecast to be almost 80 here that day. That's not ridiculously warm for SC in December, but I would gladly take 45-50F.

But back to food. My parents own a bakery, and I worked there for many years. Thanksgiving through Christmas is their busiest time of the year, and most of my "good" food memories (cookies, candy, gingerbread houses, fruit cakes) were erased during the 17 or so years I worked there, those 90-100 hour weeks making these memories for other people. It's kind of sad, really. Mixing 100lbs. of liquored fruit for fruitcakes takes the joy out of food at Christmas, if you know what I mean.

I've been out for 8 years, and now I am starting to get back into Christmas cookies and breads...except now I'm old and don't really eat refined sugar/complex carbs. It's like my prime cookie eating years were taken away from me. :face:

But, pre-bakery, my dad would make a gingerbread house and my brother, sister, and I would help decorate it. We'd use Necco wafers for roof tiles, which reminds me of Christmas...and that's the only time I've every seen Necco wafers. Nasty things, tbh.

Not candy, but we've made a tradition of making glühwein every year for the past 5 years. Thanks Rick Steves :thumb:
