A bill just made it out of committee in NC that would require every school to have a sign saying “In God We Trust” and to teach cursive. This state is really moving forward.

"When you see the words 'In God We Trust,' certainly no one is compelling you to worship a god … or to practice any particular religion," Jones said.

Democratic Rep. Cecil Brockman of Greensboro said the ACLU had a good point, that "we have a right to believe whatever religion we want, but we also have a right to not believe anything at all.”
Jones is a Canaan, and I hope that the bill doesn't actually get passed (or fails after the inevitable lawsuit).

If no one is compelling you to worship then what is the point of every school having a sign?

I actually agree with the cursive part even though I don't think it needs to be state mandated. I've seen our district not teach it and there's a whole group of kids that can't sign their own name.

I couldn't tell you the last time that I actually wrote out my name in [legible] cursive. My signature is just some squiggly lines.

For the betterment of society cursive should be dropped entirely and block lettering emphasized for those emergency situations you don't have a phone.

Why don't we all just get neurotransmitters to communicate with a RF device and we can talk telepathically via ASCII characters?

I would be 100% okay with this.

Why do you need to sign your own name in proper cursive? Even if you print your name as your signature, it's still a legal signature.

Some forms require you to print and sign your name. Would you simply be able to print your name twice?

What is the practical benefit of cursive? Being able to read some of the primary documents is the only one I can think of.

Stuff at the National Archives in DC a couple months ago and a card from my grandmother. That's it, that's the list.

Starting my doctoral program this morning.

I've been out of school for ten years.

How long does it take to get this odd feeling of out-of-water to go away?
