SC is better than NC. May start teaching there in the next couple years.

I wouldn't have said that ten years ago, but the sea change over the last 6-7 years in the state legislature in Raleigh (and governor's office) has changed things for the worse.

Question for pretty much any scholar type, really. c2i, obhave, lawyer types, etc.

Part of my program requirement is a Long Paper. I'm about to start my literature review on it so I'm not to deep into it. But I did meet with my chosen adviser to discuss it last week. I told her that I was interested in getting it published in an academic peer reviewed Cyber Security Policy journal. She's trying to steer me away from that and have it published in a Law Review (not necessarily my schools journals as I don't think highly of them).

What do you academics think? There is a large chance I don't ever practice law in a traditional way so being recognized in my current career as a security specialist seems to have more value. I just can't see that the community of cyber security specialists will bother to dip into Law Review journals for policy guidance. Also, I feel like the people that pick up Law Reviews for light reading won't really care much about the issue I'm working on.

Barrier to entry into a law review might be lower, though. The topic is time sensitive enough that I'm not sure waiting to shop it to one type of journal and the rewrite it to accommodate a different type of journal would be prudent.

Awe. Work has been insane the past couple months. I come on here for only a couple min every once in a while.

For science journals, if they don't feel it is the right fit, they will reject it outright at the beginning and not even send it to review. So if the cyber journal is the same way, it being "time sensitive" shouldn't be a major hurtle outside of reformatting it. (although I have no idea how much time that would take for you).

I think you should publish where it will have a more relevant audience. It also seems like that journal is better for your career, so I would do the cyber security one.

Glad you're still hanging out, figured you were pretty busy. In the middle of my finals period myself.

I didn't page you for the journal thing, but thank you all the same. I'll make a better determination after doing literature review, I think. I just don't think particularly highly of my schools law review and I don't think legal professionals (not legal academics) think much of them either so I'm really leaning more towards the broader CS audience. We'll see in time.

Also remember that open access journals exist.

Yeah, I told my adviser I'm only interested in open access journals. Which is when she pivoted with "well, law reviews are open access..." ;)

What and where, if you don't mind sharing?

And, by the way, congrats to a rather irrational decision!!

State of Arkansas now seriously considering allowing 529 plans to be used to pay for K-12 private school education. Opponents call it "back-door voucher program" - but I like it...

It is a theological doctoral program at our denominational seminary. All the normal Ph.D processes, just formated a bit differently.

Did your advisor give you any reason(s) why she prefers you to follow the "law route" as opposed to the "cyber security route"? I serve as an advisor just for PhD theses (so there is no dilemma where the final product should go). However, I can imagine that if I was approached to be a finance honor thesis advisor, then I'd want the student to write the paper as if it were intended for a broad finance audience (because that's what the degree is about), as opposed for a specific non-finance group. Since you are studying "law", I generally see nothing wrong with the requirement to write/position the final product for "lawyers." Just my $0.02...

Cool - so how many years is one expected to sink into that?

That meeting was a while ago, but the gist of it seems to be that the school would be better able to place my writing into a legal publication. If I wanted to seek publication in a CS journal I would be more on my own. Which doesn't really bother me.

Depends. My track will take me two to three years of classwork and then up to but not to exceed two years to get the dissertation done.

Betsy DeVos is very wrong, and about 30 years behind the times.
The vast majority of learning environments have remained the same since the Industrial Revolution, because they were made in its image.

Easily shows how little time she's spent in actual classrooms.

If her goal is to change education, she should at least have some idea of what it is currently like.

Yeah, been a pretty **** week for my wife. She was not selected first wave at Chatham for her DPT program on Tuesday, was flatly rejected by Pitt on Wednesday, found out her Mom has cancer (again) on Thursday. Frankly, I'm scared to go home today.
My wife was selected from the waitlist at Slippery Rock University today, her second choice. Easily the best day we've had as a family in almost a year. What a load off of our shoulders. So proud of her. Fair bit of dust in the air of this room, suddenly.

I/we are still hoping to get a call from Chatham (she's on their 'priority waitlist'), but the end of April is when DPT candidates have to commit to their schools so if they don't give her an offer soon they'll miss out.

Can't understate how huge this is, especially after this last year.
