From what I've read, the YTTV/Chromecast thing is available to new subscribers as well.

That's why they did this new promo. To throw a bone to longtime subscribers as well. I just didn't know you had to be with them since June 2018. Bummer

If you've been a member since Jun 2018 or prior you get a free Chromecast. If you signed up between Oct 15 and Dec 31, 2020 you get a free Chromecast. If you signed up anywhere between July 2018 and Oct 14, 2020 you get bubkis.

That's me.
But that said, Chromecast has been a pretty lame experience so far. I know the current one is 'new' but, meh. My TV only has one USB port for power, too, so it loses out to the FireStick.

They lost the Fox RSNs on 10/1, which was also right on the heel of their last price hike. I wonder if that's why they chose that date.

We have AT&T Fixed Wireless and it works well.
I think we pay $40.00 for it and then $90.00 for the DirecTV.

The only other "option" is AT&T DSL which is the same 6 mbps it was back when we moved here in 2007. There is probably satellite which is a no go for gaming.

Fios is still hit and miss around here...go 5 or 10 miles in any direction no FIOS. Again I am lucky where we are.

A buddy of mine has it rough. Verizon ran fiber to the end of his street, but has not run it down his actual street. That was 8 years ago, and nothing has changed, so he’s stuck with Comcast.

Some good news:
A new US law that goes into effect on December 20 will require ISPs to stop charging “rental” fees for equipment, such as routers, that customers own themselvesBroadband and TV providers will finally be required to stop charging "rental" fees for equipment that customers own themselves, thanks to a new US law that takes effect on Sunday.
The bogus fees were outlawed by the Television Viewer Protection Act (TVPA), which was approved by Congress and signed by President Trump in December 2019. The law was originally scheduled to take effect on June 20, but Congress gave the Federal Communications Commission leeway to delay enforcement by six months if the FCC "finds that good cause exists for such an additional extension."
The FCC in April granted the six-month delay to ISPs, claiming that providers needed more time to comply because of the coronavirus pandemic. That decision delayed implementation of the new requirements until December 20, 2020.

Re FIOS availability
Back when we lived in Redondo, Verizon trucks rolled up to the alley behind our apartment and spent a few days running fiber lines. Was super stoked, as at the time we had Verizon DSL, so I figured we'd be offered some sort of upgrade option/pricing. Nope. The fiber lines were just for the businesses on the street behind our apartment building. We were literally one block outside of their coverage; I could hit FIOS customer addresses with a rock thrown from my kitchen.

That's doubtful. Not enough population density to warrant competition or to push Spectrum to increase speeds at our tier.
There is 400 mbps service, for $20 more per month. No thanks.
After some research, I noticed that Spectrum customers were getting a free bump to 200 mbps in the Orlando area before the price goes up. Of course, there is plenty of competition there.

Basically, this guy orders FIOS because AT&T says it's available in his neighborhood. Then they come out to install it, and it's actually not there. He's done this six or seven times over the last year or so.

I super very much agree that in the 21st century internet access should be treated as a public utility, not a private service. Maybe not public utility so everyone can get fiber optic, but it seems that as a minimum people should have pretty much universal access to at least a 50 mbs pipe.
We had Wave gig broadband in South San Francisco that cost $99/mo, and included unlimited data. We're on a 400 mbs line now at $70/mo including unlimited data; upgrading to gig would be $109/mo unlimited.

10 years in prison for illegal streaming? It's in the Covid-19 relief bill
You probably have nothing to worry about: The "Protecting Lawful Streaming Act," which was introduced earlier this month by Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, doesn't target casual internet users. The law specifies that it doesn't apply to people who use illegal streaming services or "individuals who access pirated streams or unwittingly stream unauthorized copies of copyrighted works."
Rather, it's focused on "commercial, for-profit streaming piracy services" that make money from illegally streaming copyrighted material.
