Like dodint and others have said, with the popularity of the Penguins, my "local" team's blackouts (Hurricanes), no playoff games, it didn't make sense for me to pay for 55 games for NHL.tv. If you watch non-Pens games, then sure, but I don't have the time/interest. I am stunned how well reddit works for all things streaming live sports. My only issue is that the links don't work well on mobile, despite saying that it should work on mobile devices.

I tried streaming Xfinity ESPN feed last night and it looked like garbage, but the ESPN app's feed via was excellent. No buffering, and 60fps. Same with NFLstreams over the weekend.
So you are saying don't go the NHL.tv route? And they also don't show the playoff games if you get a team specific channel, even for the first round?

Can you do the reddit nhlstreams through a Roku device?

I do nhlstreams on my firestick using the silk browser. I imagine if Roku has a web browser it could do the same.

yea i do that for NFL and MLB but have found it worth the extra money for NHL for convenience of having them all there without navigating the browser and ads and such since I watch it more often. I want to say Roku doesn't have a browser though

My wife is pissed at me. I subscribed to Philo TV as well because it pretty much gives me every channel and more than I had with cable with the combination of Hulu and Philo. And I'm still saving about $60/month after it than what I was paying for cable.

I thought I would surprise her because it carries 3 hallmark channels. Kids are pumped because it has 4 Nick channels. And I get AMC and a few other channels that are missing from Hulu.

She said I don't need all of that TV and I'm wasting $20 a month for it and to get rid of it. I told her I signed on for a year (I can cancel at any time). Oh well. Me and the kids are happy.

Are they just referencing the old afternoon lineup schedule or will there be "live" channel programming on Disney+ in addition to the VOD?

Pretty sure they are referencing. My favorite 2 hour block as a kid.

Trying to help my buddy get setup for Disney+. **** Disney and Amazon don't get along so they are not putting an app out for Amazon products. Had to recommend Roku for him.

FireStick 4k is $25 today. Promo code is on the product page. I picked up another one since I am deleting my DirecTV on the 18th.

I still think they work out a deal by the time Disney+ is ready to roll.

Yeah, Amazon is like the 3rd best seller in streaming hardware, Disney not going to lose out on that

That got me curious so I looked it up...

Image
According to Strategy Analytics, the five most popular streaming devices run software from Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Samsung (Tizen), and Google, which includes Android TV as well as Chromecast devices.

Despite its perceived popularity and strong sales, Amazon’s Fire TV platform is in sixth place in terms of devices currently in use. These figures suggest that most people are content to use their TV’s built-in apps to stream video or rely on a gaming console they already own for entertainment. The days of the dedicated streaming boxes are hardly over, but it seems like most people aren’t rushing to buy a standalone set-top box nowadays.
Article also notes "The figures don’t necessarily mean that Roku is selling millions of its standalone streaming devices, though. Along with being used on streaming boxes like the Roku Premiere, Roku’s straightforward software is also used as the built-in operating system for smart TVs such as those from TCL, JVC, Sharp, Philips US, and others."

That’s one area where Amazon has failed to corner the market on. They have 1-2 TVs that have their Fire software on, and they’re bottom of the barrel, bare bones models. Whereas others have partnered with vendors to include it on a wide array of hardware. Roku is built into low-to-middle tier stuff, while Android is mid-high end.

The TCL Roku 4k tv I bought a while back is considered "mid" tier I'm guessing but the built in Roku was a selling point. One less device to hook up, and makes streaming for my wife easy. My Vizio has a built in chromecast and built in streaming, but the PS4 is hooked up to it so that is what is mainly used. I do have a fire stick for the tv on the back porch and it works just fine for what it's used for.

I'm curious why they don't take crossover installs into account. The PlayStation number appears to just be PS4/PS4 Pro consoles, but the Vue app is on Roku, Fire, Android TV (which includes Sony TVs), and Apple TV. How did they define 'device'?

Seems like they are talking about operating systems. Like my LG TV runs an Android OS skinned as LG.

I'd like to see a more thorough comparison, though. Break out hardware and software and all that.

I'm just curious, nothing more than that. I'd be interested to see how many of these devices are external, built into the TV, etc., and how these all compare when you combine the hardware and software solutions (Android and Amazon's app, for instance).

Exactly what I said earlier. They misread the market and focused on their own hardware, whereas Roku took advantage of the marketplace.
