Episode run times
EP1 54min
EP2 58min
EP3 1hr
EP4 1hr 18min
EP5 1hr 20min
EP6 1hr 20min

I’m thinking episode 1 is prologue. Episode 2 and 3 are the battle for winterfell. And then who knows. I can’t imagine the winterfell fighting to be < 1 hour or not happening until ep 4.

Episode 3 is Battle of Winterfell. Based on those run times my guess is the episode is just nothing but action the entire time.

I was hoping every episode would be around 90 minutes. Obviously they shouldn't extend the runtime just to extend the runtime, but I hope they don't rush anything.

I know, I know. May as well get the fidget spinner out of storage too.

They rushed season 7 because they had to get to the end game. I'm okay with that as long as they take their time with season 8.

They have 4 episodes to do at least 2 huge battles, wrap up the Kings Landing thread and establish new Westeros. I’ll let us draw our own conclusions about the pacing. But I guess it’s actually 5 and a half, based on run time.

My wife subscribes to Entertainment Weekly (originally as a fundraiser for my kids’ school), and usually I don’t even look at it. The current issue, however, is a double issue almost entirely about Game of Thrones.

Some details on the Battle of Winterfell:

-Expected to be the longest consecutive battle sequence ever committed to film. Yes, even longer than the Battle at Helm’s Deep (which they used as a template).
-Took 11 weeks of night shooting to complete the episode, with ~750 crew and cast involved
-One of the female leads collapsed on set during filming, but returned the next day for filming
-Same director as Hardhome and Battle of the Bastards (Miguel Sapochnik)
-The finale is directed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and has had unprecedented levels of security for set access, airspace restrictions, and so on.

I find myself waffling between not caring and thinking this is going to be lame. I think what kept me so engaged while watching the prior seasons were characters like Jeffrey, Ramsey, and Cersei. I don’t care how awesome the production value is, a man vs zombie war is still just a man vs zombie war. I think Hardhomme represented something different, so was essentially that, but still had plot driving elements to it.

I fear the arc of the season is just going to be the feeling that the good guys are being beaten, as important charcters periodically get their fantastic death scenes. Until something happens and then the good guys win.
