So it'll open with what...bran tells everyone about the wall once they get to winterfell. They have to go south because they can't fight before Jaime hooks in (narratively speaking). So they hole up in the river lands or something...the walkers take winterfell...and some good guys want to go fight. Some want to regroup. Then they eventually meet the dead at the twins near water and beat them there. Then they deal with Cersei. But they'll also have to fight euron in the mean time? Ehhhh. I don't have high hopes they can pull it together.

The final two seasons should have been normal lengths. These shortened seasons are nonsense.

Perhaps the final battle takes place in the Trident? A poetic ending in which Targaryen, Stark, and Lannister all work together?

That works. But wInterfell HAS to be toast right? Maybe there's a mini battle there where a couple people die in ep 1 or 2 before everyone flees. Would be kind of cool and very weird if arya starts cutting thru zombies right off the bat. Looking forward to that kind of juxtaposition

You already knew this, but GRRM will never finish Winds of Winter.

http://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/

No, winter is not coming… not in 2018, at least. You’re going to have to keep waiting for THE WINDS OF WINTER.

You will, however, be able to return to Westeros this year, as I suggested back over on Live Journal.

Archmaester Gyldayn has at last completed and delivered the first half of his monumental history of the Targaryen kings of Westeros, FIRE & BLOOD, and Bantam Spectra and HarperCollins Voyager will be releasing the hardcover on November 20, I am thrilled to say.

Shockingly, GRRM revealed that TWOW will NOT be released in 2018.

(Let me show you my shocked face)

He is, however, releasing Fire and Blood in November... A history of the Targaryens... Volume 1.

Volume 2 will be "a few years down the line".

Seriously with this guy. He has to be doing this **** on purpose at this point.

I can understand that Martin has lost interest in the storyline, but man, I don't know how you can totally F over your fans like that.

The show did some wackadoodle **** to try and tie up loose ends and progress the story to conclusion. The book was even more expanded and would require enhanced wackadoodle **** to happen.

I'm five months from finishing the last book, I'd probably be fine if there weren't any more and we just watch it end next year on HBO.

That's the sad thing...the books are an afterthought to me at this point. I've pretty much just accepted the show as canon.

It's pretty gnarly. I'm not the type to think people owe their fans anything, but he has to know this is just pissing people off. Where's Annie Wilkes when you need her?

It's still fascinating that in September 2015, he was sure he could finish it by December 2015. But now in April 2018, he knows there's no way it's coming out in 2018 at all.

That's an incredible regression in 3 years. I'm much more interested in a tell-all "what the hell happened" memoir than TWOW itself.
Quoted for damn truth.

The network has ordered a prequel drama from writer Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) and author George R.R. Martin. The network has released an official description of the show’s storyline, and it’s another tale spread across multiple locations and clans: Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

I imagine the show just shattered Martin's will to finish the current story. Probably the reason he's doing so many side projects.

That's the bed he made though.

As far as any prequel goes, all comes down to execution. There are certainly interesting stories to be told. Not like he's ever gonna finish the books so whatever in those regards.

The golden age of heroes in Westeros has found at least one of its heroes in Naomi Watts.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Watts will join Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin’s prequel series—set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, in the period of time where a fantastical golden age of magic and myth in the kingdoms of Westeros was forever transformed by the Long Night and the invasion of the White Walkers. Watts will play one of the untitled show’s primary roles, a currently-unnamed character who is “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret,” which, well, sounds very Game of Thrones-y.
