Is it possible, nay, permissible, to think the writing has completely gone off the rails and still enjoy the spectacle? That's where I'm at now.

I think that’s where pretty much everyone is at.

So are we thinking that Varys' handiwork last week brings a bunch of houses to King's Landing to fight Dany? I don't really foresee another protracted battle scene though.

Like I said a while back, for a story that is complex, the closing is rushed, and therefore the show has gone downhill. But it's still enjoyable.

As much as I would have preferred for Cersei to meet a more cruel fate, horrible people don't always get a cruel death in real life and being crushed to death isn't exactly a picnic.

thinking about it more, i wanted Stark satisfaction more than Cersei suffering. but now the Starks don't give a hoot since they're about to get BBQ'd, so whatever. bittersweet it is.

Agreed. As much as I hoped Cersei would meet some sort of miserable end, we've also gotten plenty of "justice served" deaths for most of the other awful people on this show - Ramsey, Joffrey, Walder Frey & Littlefinger chief among them.

I also liked the symbolism of the only sanctuary she had left crashing down on her.

These are good points. I think I can ultimately live with this decision.

If the premise is revealed next week that Dany is legit insane and this episode was completely because of her Targaryen donkey brain and not because of emotional triggers then this isn’t a terrible episode.

...still wanted Cleganebowl to be of some consequence, but I never cared a ton for that sub plot.

I get that, but ASOIAF is GRRM's creation, so I think he can do whatever he wants with it and doesn't owe the audience anything.
I agree, to a point. The sticking point is that I'd bet good money when GRRM sold the rights to HBO, he told them he'd have the last two books finished before it came time to film that material. I really don't think HBO would have greenlit the series if they thought there was a good chance they'd have to make up the last few seasons as they went along.

That’s...not true.

Keep in mind this was the worst, most needlessly violent act ever committed in human history. I’m hoping she will be wearing the craziest of crazy pants on Sunday. If they try to make her seem at all like a cogent, rational person who just has a chip on her shoulder...woof.

What does that matter? She quite obviously completely lost it in that moment. The degree of damage has nothing to do with it. It's only the worst act ever because she has Drogon. If all she had was a dagger, it would have been at worst a handful of people.

So now that dragons can’t be killed again how does anyone oppose her. Even if all of Westeros decided to band together they would lose.

It's literally how she amassed every bit of her power.

The Cersei death was awful, and nothing will change how bad it was handled.

quick accounting of who didn't appear in last episode that might play a role in the finale:

Sansa
Bran
Yara
Brienne
Bronn
Samwell

I could see Samwell just being content now. Yara might mind her own beeswax on the iron isles and be out of it all now, or play a part in jon vs dany. Sansa and Bran, who tf knows there, wildcards. Is there a place for Bronn or Brienne anymore?
Only thing that makes sense for bronn to show up is saving Tyrion from Dany. Can't think of anything else.
I thought Samwell pulled a “peace out” in episode 4.
