Why HBO Max, Peacock Are Deadlocked in Talks With Roku and Amazon
https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/h ... 234703977/
The standoffs, of course, revolve around money. More than that, the distribution disputes are about long-term strategic access to rapidly growing streaming-first audiences, as well as advertising inventory. One media company exec says Roku and Amazon are asking for “egregious” terms. On the other side, an insider at one of the over-the-top platform providers says they’re simply looking for “a reasonable share” of the value they create for partners — and adds that companies like WarnerMedia and NBCU are coming to the table with an “old TV mindset.”

Apple, which offers the HBO Max app, agreed to stop selling HBO through Apple TV Channels. But Amazon and Roku are resisting.

“They want to aggregate all this content into a central experience,” says an industry exec familiar with the talks. “But Netflix is never going to do that. Hulu is never going to do that. HBO did that early on, and now Amazon and Roku have a real problem because if HBO is not in their channels that model falls apart.”

Discovery Honors Grant Imahara With ‘Mythbusters’ Marathon
Discovery has announced that it will pay tribute to the late Grant Imahara with a marathon lineup of “Mythbusters” episodes.

A total of eight episodes will air across Discovery Channel and Science Channel on July 17 and 18. Imahara died from a brain aneurism earlier this week at the age of 49.

He served as co-host for more than 200 episodes of “Mythbusters,” beginning with season 3 in 2005, through 2014. The marathon’s episodes will feature some of Imahara’s favorite “MythBusters” moments, per Discovery, including a test to see whether an armor made of folded paper would hold up against an attack, and whether a hotel room shower curtain could be turned into a life-saving parachute.

The lineup also includes “Killer Robots: Robo Games 2011,” a one-hour special which saw Imahara serve as a tour guide through the International Robogames Competition, following everyday engineers and backyard brainiacs as they produced mechanized mayhem. An episode of the Netflix show “White Rabbit Project,” which Imahara co-hosted with fellow “Mythbusters” alums Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, will close out the marathon on Saturday night.
I will be tuning in. RIP Grant.

Finally got around to watching long strange trip on Amazon, dang, that's well done. I live the segment on the deadheads sections of a concert, especially the deaf people with balloons hearing the music through the vibrations. A good bit of penises dangling throughout the series as well.

Ellen DeGeneres has built her worldwide, multimillion-dollar brand on the motto “be kind,” with lavish giveaways and acts of charity. But behind the scenes, current and former employees on her leading daytime show say they faced racism, fear, and intimidation.

“That ‘be kind’ bullshit only happens when the cameras are on. It’s all for show,” one former employee told BuzzFeed News. “I know they give money to people and help them out, but it’s for show.”

I'm rewatching the HBO John Adams miniseries with my kids. They love it! It really holds up well, and the acting is excellent. Good companion piece to our viewing of Hamilton earlier this week.

Watched first 2 episodes of season 2 of Dark. Whoa, what a show. Every time I sit down to watch this, I come away with my brain working overtime and thinking I can't believe they just did that. This show is awesome.

For those of yinz with kids (and hell, even if you just like animated stuff), the Carmen Sandiego series on Netflix is a really fun watch.

On a side note, it's crazy that Broderbund has been out of business for 22 years. Carmen Sandiego, Print Shop Deluxe, Myst...what a great part of my childhood.

On a Sandiego search, I just found this video from the presenters/writers of that show that was posted three months ago. Only 250 views on Youtube :(

Features a cameo from Senator Joe Biden.

Anyone watch Alone on the History Channel?

Caught season 6 on Netflix (only season on there) and went back to start the whole series on demand.

It’s basically Survivor without games, BS and production value. All self-filmed survival. The winner, whoever taps out last, takes all.

I'm a sucker for the home reno shows, and the Maine Cabin Masters one has been the latest to hook me. I want a 20'x20' cabin by a lake so bad right now.

I'm just reading about this now, but evidently Netflix is developing a Chronicles of Narnia "universe" - all the films, plus an extended universe.

I was just thinking how the film adaptations kind of petered out after the first couple of novels, and that those stories were ripe for development.

Finished season 2 of Dark. I feel like this show is a good workout for my brain. I also kinda love how it's a trashy soap opera. The attention to detail is off the charts.

We’re taking it slow so that we don’t burn through it too quickly. My wife didn’t even start watching until midway through season 1, but was hooked. Kinda sucks, because now I have to wait for her to watch it.

My problem with not rushing through is I forget who everyone is and have to have the wife give me a family tree lesson again. "Oh come on, you really don't remember who that is?" Comes out a lot during this.

My daughter has been watching Nailed It on Netflix all day, and I must say, it’s a fun watch. It’s like the baking version of Worst Cooks in America. Which made me think of the cooking shows I used to watch as a kid. Yan Can Cook was awesome, and probably my favorite.

Nice.

Our daughter has fallen in love with cooking shows. Buddy vs Duff is a really fun one for the kids. I actually got Duff to respond on Twitter at the anniversary cake she decorated for my wife and I, which was cool.
