I disagree. When this is aired on TV it's just aired as Blue Planet II, and then it ends up being an hour of people complaining about their jobs. Watched a woman last night in tears because she didn't get to see a certain species spawn. It's more 'reality' TV than I would like from BP which was cool because it was pretty much devoid of people.

Obviously that's easily remedied by not watching it on TV so you can pick and choose what you want to see, the real documentary or the extra bits. But I don't always have the remote, so....
I honestly can't recall what you're talking about here, but most of the "behind the scenes" stuff in Attenborough's documentaries are like this (which I watched last night, and ripped this from the ending):

I love stuff like this, because you get to see just how they get these amazing shots of animal behavior. How they're able to follow a story line from start to finish on such a consistent basis is remarkable.

I've never watched any of the Attenborough nature docs. Are they good? :slug:

It's been 7 years and he's been the most consistent with all of these other guys coming back.

Have you seen any of the stuff he's produced on TV (namely in Britain)? The Karl Pilkington stuff is comedy gold.

I agree. Very little from him I haven't liked.

There's going to be a new Karl Pilkington show coming out in a few months called "Sick of It" that I'm excited about. His views on everything are outstanding.

Awesome. I didn't enjoy Moaning of Life as much as I thought I would. It felt like he played into his character a bit too much. Even still, I'm always excited for more Karl Dilkington.

I couldn't tell how authentic Idiot Abroad is/was, but I got the vibe that Ricky Gervais is a grade A POS IRL. However, I do find him funny at times.

How he treats Karl is an act. He seems like just a guy. Neither good nor bad. Like most of us.

I'm watching Collateral on Netflix and it's pretty good. It's with the incomparable Carey Mulligan, so that's good, too.

Right. Listen to the radio show and he’s not an ass to him all the time. He busts his balls constantly but that’s what friends do.

Second season of the Norwegian drama Occupied dropped on Netflix. The first season was pretty good, about the Russian invasion of Norway at the behest of the EU (due to Norway getting out of fossil fuel production/use).

One cool scene was how resistance leaders used DayZ in game chat to communicate, because it's not logged or recorded and relatively anonymous. I think Patriot used Words with Friends for incognito chatting.

Season two of Sneaky Pete was just OK. Had trouble holding my attention.

I wonder how much per episode? I figure $250 mil was for the rights, which leaves $250 mil for production. Figure 10 episodes a season, 2 seasons = $12.5 an episode. I'm reading GoT is around $10 with the final season at $15 ea. I'm glad they are going all in on these. I hope they get it right.

speaking of good looking shows. Altered Carbon 4k/HDR is easily the best looking thing ever put on the TV screen. I've been reading a listening to podcasts of how they made the show and they used an arri alexa 65 camera for the first time ever with a TV show and the results are simply jaw dropping. The show isn't perfect, but I'm a huge fan of just about everything about it. I really hope they continue with this show.

I just hope they do something unique with it. Middle-Earth is huge and has thousands of years of history. They can't do anything with The Silmarillion, but that still leaves most of the second age and beyond up for grabs.

I know I'm 40 years behind but Fawlty Towers is exceptional.
Don't mention the war.
My wife had never heard of it. This episode ended up being her indoctrination to it. She loved it.

So good to make her laugh. :thumb:

"When you think about it from Amazon’s perspective, whether the Lord of the Rings show is actually good is almost besides the point."

Yeah, my confidence level in this project is pretty much zero.

The production dollar amount tracks with what the LOTR trilogy budget was adjusting for inflation. But I'm really surprised Christopher Tolkien agreed to do this. He absolutely hated how the movies diluted the 'seriousness' of his father's work (this despite the massive uptick in book sales after LOTR came out, but I digress), and at one point he vowed to never allow any further dramatizations of Middle-earth. I guess when someone dangles a nine-figure check in front of your face, any pretensions around artistic integrity evaporates.

Christopher Tolkien resigned from the estate the same week the Amazon deal was struck.
