Ah, the NFL, where the owners still feel like they're in the 1800s.

Definitely looking forward to when Roethlisberger retires and the Steelers are irrelevant for a bit, so I can be completely disinterested in this **** show.

Briefly retired offensive lineman Richie Incognito has been placed on “involuntary psychiatric hold” after being involved in a gym altercation today in which he allegedly threw a dumbbell at another person, TMZ reports.

According to Buffalo ABC affiliate WKBW, police said Incognito wasn’t actually arrested but placed under involuntary mental evaluation. Incognito, who was released by the Buffalo Bills two days ago, reportedly got into the argument with someone else working out at a fitness center in Boca Raton, Fla. More from TMZ:

We spoke with the alleged victim who tells us Incognito first threw a tennis ball at him for no reason — before grabbing a dumbbell and heaving that as well.

The alleged victim says Incognito was rambling about the government and screaming at the man to “get off my f*cking playground.”
Law enforcement confirms cops were called to the gym and met with Incognito.

Incognito had been placed under mental evaluation previously in February 2014, after he was suspended from the Miami Dolphins for part of the 2013 season for his role in bullying his teammate Jonathan Martin, and after he smashed up his own Ferrari with a baseball bat.

Play the anthem with no one on the field. When it's finished, the teams come out.

Our national anthem blows, so I’d prefer they just omit it entirely.

Just don't play it at all. In Trump's America that would cause more outrage, but this wasn't a thing until the late 90s right?

If anything, I hope the players now stand-up and do the fist in the air thing every chance they get. Make the NFL make another dumb rule and go to the next form of protest.

I was curious if there were any defenders of Incognito back when this all happened... Luckily, the closest I could find was Jim saying he didn't care about it. Not bad, crew. Not bad.

Some will challenge it, some won't. It will be interesting to see who does and what happens.

It's a dumb rule, and singing the anthem before a pro sporting event is equally dumb.

Keep doing what they're doing. Play America the beautiful, then punish the undesirables for not licking their masters boots. History won't be written by us, so I'm confident that the "legacy" of these greedy reptiles will end up as they deserve.

It really started in earnest during WWII, and other sports adopted the practice shortly thereafter.

The newer wrinkle is the inclusion of military and first responder feel-good stories as a pretty much obligatory part of the display post 9/11.

The player he harassed (I can't remember his name) was put into involuntary psychiatric hold after posting threats against Incognito, Pouncey, and his old high school. And he was caught outside said school with weapons.

I love that the NFL thinks this will solve the problem. Players who want to protest will either stay in the locker room, or more likely they'll stand on the field with their backs to the flag. I'm looking forward to seeing new creative protests.

As I understand it, the new policy will require all team personnel on the field/sidelines to display 'appropriate respect' or face the team fine. I would think turning your back would fall afoul of that.

Who determines what is appropriate? That's some vague wording.

Players will find a loop hole and it will be glorious.

Art Rooney of the Steelers said while it was not defined, he believes that raising a fist and linking arms during the playing of the anthem also would constitute disrespect of the anthem.

You know how there's that pump up music and players entering the field of play, and they then go to the sidelines? Just start the game then. Pretty simple, really.
