if terrell davis belongs in the HoF, then so does shaun alexander. in other words: he doesn't.

Specialists getting in, imo, is like putting the best pinch hitter or left handed specialist into the MLB HOF, imo. That said, specialists are already in and I concede Hester should be in on those grounds. My personal semi-irrational stance is none of them should be in. Shrug

I forgot TD got in. Probably shouldn't have
Comparing pinch hitters and left handed specialists to a returner/kicker/punter is not a very good comparison. That is like comparing an apple to a steak.

I think that's an entirely defensible position. But it's a touch off-putting from a certain angle to say..."there's nothing a player in this position can ever do to be enshrined in the archives of historical recognition". Again, I can buy it...I'm not sure that I do. I think slappy's stance best sums up mine...I'll take the elite of the elite...no Elisha Mannings...

Shaun Alexander is probably a good, complete, peak season away from hitting TD's peak...tough comparison...but I get the point...

Priest Holmes is perhaps the closest analogue, though he doesnt have a high approaching Davis' 2K-yard season

If Devon Hestor is HOF worthy, so is Don Beebe

Holmes <-> TD comparison is apt.

Don't get the Hester <-> Beebe connection though...

Hester is getting in purely on his ST skills. Don Beebe was considered the best ST guy for many years. He was just on the other side of the ball.

special teams tackles do not equal special teams TDs on a 1000 to 1 basis, let alone 1 to 1

Difficult. Special Teamers are typically the guys that can't make anything of their touches as position players. Hester's production fell off when he became an actual WR.
Sproles is your best bet recently as a guy who was a great returner and a pretty good position player. The Hall of Really Good.

Meanwhile, this reminded me of Dante Hall. I looked up his playoff stats and he had 1 KO return TD in his one playoff game in 2003. That's not the surprising part, it's that he had 7 returns. I had blocked that Chiefs-Colts #nopunts game from memory.

Yeah, slappy's on a rare roll here, this doesn't equate the same way...perhaps unfairly...but we would probably need some gauge to figure this out a little better...

As a weak for-instance, Special Teams Player of the Week was started in 1993 and therefore covered 5 of Beebe's 9 years in the league...he was awarded it once. Perhaps that is biased towards points also...but what kind of baseline are we working off of here...?

27 TD's...3 yrs over 2k from scrimmage
-Homer

dont get me wrong I like Priest Holmes and rooted for him (on KC at least), wasnt the only undrafted player to do a bunch of impressive stuff?

You can't just say TDs on ST is the only way somebody can be HoF worthy. If TDs and scoring were the standard, no offensive or defensive linemen would be in the hall.

My argument is really this: neither Beebe nor Hester belong in the hall.
