It's about time they moved the players down field, that should help a lot.

I think the problem is going to be the landing zone nonsense. Going to need a flowchart for that.

is it the XFL rule?

if so then I’m good with it. Also do 4th and 20 “onside kicks”

I don't even care, just cut the kick-off all together and get straight to the 2 minute commercial break. That's the only reason why it's still in the game anyways.

It was pointed out that on the immediate heels of the first (probably last/only) kick returner getting into Canton we had the first Super Bowl with zero kick returns.

Let it evolve with the times. I'm all for changing the kickoff to whatever format allows for the return of, er, returns. They can be a singularly exciting aspect of the game that have been functionally eliminated in the pursuit of safety.

An NFL rule change that’s actually good? XFL improves the NFL again.

Now it brings some strategy because you may not want to boot it out of the end zone. So now high in the air, in bounds, and stay out of the end zone.

I assume you have to kick it past a certain point now? Otherwise, you'd just pop it up between the two lines...so assuming you have to boot it past the 10 or the 20 (what if weather interferes?), then these just become zone runs mostly...

Emphasis will actually be less on speed (gunners and return men), this will take on more of a running back/running play style I'd imagine...

I'll have to look into what the rules are for putting the ball in play, because squibs, and pop up kicks, and what not must be curtailed in some way by this...

We're going to need a Hall of Fame special teams captain to make sense of it all.

I read that the receiving team gets the ball at the 40 if the kick doesn’t reach the landing zone

I believe squib kicks will basically be out of the game, unless you squib it over the coverage formation?

Ah, I see. Ok thanks for that. So, it falls under illegal procedure on a kickoff then.

So I guess you just have to declare "onside kick" as a distinct play with distinct rules then? Surprise onside kicks are dead. Not that they were a frequent play, but that's the "surprise" part of it...

I wonder if the lines can start moving when the ball hits the ground in the landing zone or if it needs to be touched...

I always thought that pop-up kicks were grossly under-utilized in this current environment...but I assume that special teams coaches - who probably have considerably more time to experiment with stuff - thought of it and it just didn't make sense to them...

Ball being caught or hitting the ground in the landing zone is the green light.

Oh yeah I definitely picture him first of course. But then I pictured Munoz. I wondered if there was a connection. Like a lineman with the name A.C. something

He doesn't have the arm strength. His sideline throws felt like they travelled forever. He could absolutely have a career as a back-up but I don't think he's a starter, let alone a build your team around him type.

He’s a plucky guy but he’s very underwhelming as a pro prospect

I’d say his ceiling is Taylor heinecke

fortunately/unfortunately whatever Payton wants, Payton will get. I do think he’s a smart enough football mind to put my trust in him and if he thinks McCarthy has what it takes to be a good QB then I gotta accept it. Though I’d rather us not throw away 16 first round picks for a guy who ends up sucking like the 9ers did with Lance

though ultimately I think Payton has his eyes set on Nix

Benchwarmerbran makes some decent sports content on TikTok. He had a funny video about this incoming QB class and their 2021 equivalent.

Supposed generational talent:
Caleb Williams = T-law

Athletic strong armed white boy who played bad competition:
Drake Maye= Zack Wilson

Strong running heisman finalist who’s passing stats were propped up by really good WRs:
Jayden Daniels = Juistin Fields

Guy with unspectacular traits who just happened to be the QB of a national championship team:
JJ McCarthy= Mac Jones

He did say the truth though: drafting a qb is largely a crapshoot. No guarantee for any draftee.
