I still think there's a difference between expansions and DLC in it's current state. Expansion packs often modded the original game while including new stuff, like 3/4s of a new game.

DLC is considered a few maps, maybe a new character, a new gun or two - It's not a fully fledged expansion in my mind, considering where we've come from.

EA removed the refund button from their website. You have to call.

Of course, they did. I'm also ready for the "loot boxes are gambling" legislators to go into full swing. They need to have the percentage of chances to win an item upon box opening. No idea how they've gotten this far, but the fact that they allow this kind of addictive behavior to skirt by is hurting a whole bunch of people with no impulse control.

I don't really understand why anybody pre-orders a game. Pre-orders used to be necessary if you wanted to buy a popular game on release day. That's never an issue now with the amount of stores that sell games and Amazon release day deliveries. I can only assume that people who pre-order want the pre-order bonuses, which often include a special item normally gained through loot boxes. If that's the case, why are the pre-order people upset about microtransactions?

I pre-ordered the Battlefront 2. With that I got 6 epic cards (tier 4), an outfit for Rey and Kylo, the new trilogy version of the Millenium Falcon, and I get the game today. I powered it up this morning before work and opened the crates. When I get home I can start the game up and play without a time restriction, 10 hours only with the EA access that started on the 9th. With the drop in credits required to unlock some of the heroes I am genuinely excited to get home and dig into the game.

As a note, I read the campaign is roughly 5-7 hours and that you can only play a portion of the missions using the EA access so if you want to complete the campaign you will need to purchase/rent.

I usually pre-order a game I know I’m going to buy day 1. If there is a pre-order bonus I might as well if I’m already buying the game. I’m a sucker for steelbook cases. Dark Souls 2 had a nice one and the Witcher 3 wasn’t bad either.

Regarding game pricing, as a general rule, players get WAY more bang for their buck than we used to. Just compare Skyrim with an RPG from the mid 90s, for example. There were so amazing RPGs from that time (Chrono Trigger what what), but the amount of content/storyline is so much greater now. That will still be true, even as multiplayer games like this one keep pulling the lootbox crap.

The lootboxes completely ruined CSGO for me.

To me personally, I think Skyrim is huge for the sake of being huge and there isn't *much* to do. Go here, collect this, collect that - procedurally generated stuff. Fallout 4 is often the same way, the missions themselves are pedantic at times.

I do think game pricing is the weird thing that never picked up, they must have some sweet spot data that says anything more than $60 is a no-go.

That flyer above - $150 for a N64 but $70 for a new game? That's...something else.

I recently watched a youtube video about how video games right now aren’t anymore expensive to make than they used to be. Publishers are releasing less games so they are simply redistributing resources that would be used to make other games.

Basically the micro transactions are pure greed. I’ll have to post the video when I get home.

Even at launch it was $199 for the console and $70/game. That's why if you got a game for Christmas or your birthday you bet your ass you're going to play it through. Why else would I have played so much Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero?

Paying voice actors that are legit hollywood actors has to drive up the cost without adding much value, right?

Define 'value'. COD's opening weekend was more than Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman. Combined. I'm sure Sledghammer handing over a few bills to Josh Duhamel won't upset the apple cart.

Also, some of the really big name voice talent - Troy Baker, Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Nolan North, John DiMaggio, Tara Strong, etc - command pretty hefty paydays in their own right. Especially actors like Hamill, Conroy, and North who are part of a franchise.

"Value" in the sense that "I don't care" who the characters are.

Unless it's a licensed game, then yeah. If I'm playing a Futurama RPG I'm going to need John DiMaggio contributing.

The loading screens are terribly long, a bunch of error message pop ups, and that whole quitting the game at the end glitch is still there. Thought they'd have those bugs fixed.

I haven't played multiplayer games in years, so I can't comment on the lootbox or micro-transaction phenomenon. My method for dealing with the cost of new games is to build up a massive backlog of games to play and only buy "new" games when they've been out for a couple years, all the DLC (if any) has been combined into one package, and the price is under $20 (I often need to wait for a Steam sale for that one, but oh well).

That's smart. I didn't buy any of the Project Cars DLC until they announced PC2 and then released the Complete Pack. It went on sale for like $25 and I cashed in.
