PS3 was a pretty miserable launch. Almost as bad as Xbox One's. You're right, too. If anybody would **** their fans over, it's Sony.

The issue with SSDs on PS4s is that the OS or hardware can't take advantage of the SSD's read and write speed to their fullest extent. The Sony architect said that his PS4 Pro's SSD made load times only 1/3 as fast as the HDD that it replaced.

Yeah, can confirm. I did it because I had a laptop die and there was a spare SSD on my desk. I would not have made the change if I had to spend my own money. The improvement is a small, incremental change.
Not sure about cooling but I figured having one less moving part would help with that.

I thought the reason why they couldn't to BW right away when comparing PS4 against the 3 was the architecture was entirely different. The PS5 and PS4 are apparently using the same or pieces of architecture.
I also think BW now, is a revenue stream in itself, where people that benefit from the game can play it, but people like me who turn everything in would likely re-buy it on nostalgia sake.

tif can attest to the problem with rebuying via PSN. All I want is to play Tony Hawks Pro Skater on my PS4. But the music licensing prevents that. If it were backwards compatible to prior generations then I could play it from the disc.
Now, I doubt the PS5 will be backwards all the way to the PSX. But at least my current collection will be futureproofed. Except that this was the generation I finally started buying digital, so who the hell knows how that is going to factor into things.

I think that's probably likely the case, any game that can operate on PS4 - will operate on PS5. Anything older than that, can accept the architecture and be updated to BC, but won't be immediate. At least as I would understand it.

You could just get a GameCube to play THPS

Pft. I still play THPS 1 and 2 on my N64.

And so it is. They launched a surprise episode, the first of many, of Nolan North playing Uncharted. So. Much. Fun.Retro Replay is one of my favorite things in the world. They teased the next episode (this Thursday) they might be playing Uncharted. I will have a fanboi squeak out if I get to watch Nolan North playing as Nate Drake.

Music to my ears.Backwards compatible with PS4, and obviously still have an optical disc drive
When last I was privy to secret info (over a year ago), this had not yet been settled.

This is more of a tech generalization, not specific to picture resolution. But I can't think of a better way to frame it at the moment.
PS2 to PS3 was like going from regular TV to DVD. PS3 to PS4 was like going from DVD to 4k without the stop off at 1080p along the way.
Going back to the beginning of the 7th gen of consoles, MSFT was a good bit further along in their development of the 360 than anyone believed. So when they announced its launch, they caught Sony around 18 months behind the power curve, and as a result they brought the PS3 to market in a sort of unfinished state. It took them the entire life cycle of the PS3 before developers were able to fully grasp and come to grips with the programming language, and you can see marked differences in early PS3 games vs late-cycle games. TLOU, for example, looks more like a PS4 title. That's not really the case with 8th gen consoles; we're just a couple years away from PS5, but the only way games look radically better is if you're running HDR and 4k on a Pro, which isn't really a fair comparison, because not all games are even developed to support that.
By the end of the 7th gen, Sony had clawed back any deficit to the MSFT console, and with the launches of the XBONE and PS4 Sony has been comfortably in the lead. This generation is on track to finish up as the second highest selling console for Sony behind PS2.

My day 1 PS4 is chugging along, but I think it's dying a slow painful death. It takes forever to load anything up, and switching between games and menus is a jarring experience now.

On N64!? You monster. Do those versions even have music?Pft. I still play THPS 1 and 2 on my N64.

I just thought about that song lineup for the 1st one the other day...
Police Truck, Superman, Jerry was a Race Car Driver... lot of fun had to those tunes.

Kojima’s team managed to maximize the PS3’s power right out of the gate with MGS4. It was one of the best looking ps3 games in its entire life cycle. I don’t know how they managed to do it.

The only devs that could really hang with the PS3 from the outset were the ones developing exclusive titles like Kojima, and of course the first party studios like Naughty Dog, Polyphony, Santa Monica Studio, etc. Which I guess makes sense.

Sony will be "clamping down" (read: censoring) sexual content in PS4 games in light of "the rise of the #MeToo movement" and a concern of "legal and social action" in the US.

Is it censoring if it's a private entity?

Missed this post earlier. This was a huge driver in incorporating BW going from Gen7 to Gen8. The machines were so different - they even used different lasers to read discs - it was difficult to interpret a narrowly-worded agreement in a way that would allow for inclusion on the new platform; "PlayStation" wasn't a descriptive enough term, and few devs will agree to something like "PlayStation, in all forms now known or hereafter devised" without a lot of extra $$$. And it's not just third party licensed content like music, but also the underlying publisher agreement with the developer for the entire game was probably worded in a way so as to make future exploitation on other platforms tricksy.tif can attest to the problem with rebuying via PSN. All I want is to play Tony Hawks Pro Skater on my PS4. But the music licensing prevents that. If it were backwards compatible to prior generations then I could play it from the disc.
I was at KDE when PS Now launched (or was programming its launch), and for months my job seemed focused on reading publisher agreements to find deals with vague enough language that would allow us to make titles available for Now without paying the developer any extra money. Because Now isn't really a different platform it's just more of a distro channel......

Got Diablo 3 for the kids for Easter and I started playing it, uh oh, this is the kind of game that can get marriages in trouble. Must tread lightly or get the wife to start playing.
