I won't be surprised if someone figures out a way to format your HDD to be able to be registered as the faster one on Xbox. Seems like a stupid decision to do it the way they've decided.

Xbox expansion packs up on Best Buy:
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate-1t ... Id=6425015

$220. So, as far as I can tell you can use your existing external drives for games that are NOT optimized for Series X. Optimized games can only be played off the internal drive or this expansion pack. You can, however, store your Series X games on any external and transfer them to the internal to play.
Xbox is making a mistake Sony did going the proprietary route with expanded memory. Sony did that with the Vita or whatever, you couldn't use stadard sd cards, you had to use their specific sony branded ones. I honestly hadn't looked up how much an external 1TD SSD drive was in general, so it may not be that far off.

In any event.... with the size of games these days, neither xbox or sony are going to have enough memory space out of the box for someone who plays lots of games and doesn't trade them in or delete them off their HDD.
You should be able to get a decent 1 TB SDD for around $100. Earlier this year I bought a 5 TB USB platter HDD that was only $100.

And I'd be very much in the bucket where expanding that storage would be baked into the cost evaluation of a purchase. That just isn't enough space out of the box, given that we're talking about individual games crossing the 100 GB install footprint on the next gen.

That decent 1TB SDD will not be able to play Series X optimized games. Right now the ONLY way to play Series X/S games will be off the internal drive or the official expansion packs. Just FYI

Yeah, MSFT seems intent on losing this round, too.

I honestly don't think they care too much. Although that $7.5B purchase may say otherwise... MS just wants you in their ecosystem, whether that's PC or console. Sony's storage solution is an internal M.2 slot where you can install a drive. This is fine for the hardcore folks but your average Joe likely isn't going to be super comfortable opening up their system. I'm hoping that Microsoft will loosen up and allow third parties to manufacture expansion cards.

I don't think this gen will be won or lost based off of storage capabilities. With both companies basically on even playing ground (and MS not absolutely shitting themselves like they did with the XBO), this gen will come down to exclusives.

I should probably create an Xbox account for my daughter so that she's not using mine..........
Let me tell you about the shitstorm I just endured because of accounts I created for my kids for the PSN and EA Origin.

I had to create PSN IDs when we got our PS4 back in 2014. Neither kid had an email, so I used a couple of old Gmail accounts for their logins. One of these was also used for my smurf EA Origin account (which I started when I got free licenses for games I already owned).

A couple of things to note: these were created as minors/child accounts, and thus one cannot change the screenname. My kids, now 12 and 14, loathe the stupid names I created six years ago.

The main issue is that somehow, I linked each others PSN accounts to the wrong Origin accounts...so eventually, my youngest son was locked out of Madden. After an hour with EA Support to unlink the accounts, they switched EA Origin games between the accounts. A second hour long EA Support chat proved to be a waste of time - I couldn't switch the games back to the proper accounts, so I had change one son's email to a third email account and change son #2 to son #1's email. Then I could switch son #1 back to his brother's email...so the games ended back up on the correct Origin account.

It melts my brain thinking about it.

Good on EA for helping you sort that out, but that's really an artifact of the wonky way Sony manages PSN accounts for minors. (They were in the process of revamping it when I left, so I don't know how different it is now.)

Who wants to bet that the "custom storage expansion card" is just a M.2 NVMe drive in a proprietary enclosure, probably with some pins switched around so that an off-the-shelf drive can't be used.

Apparently Gamestop is going to have PS5 preorders in store tomorrow, estimated 3-12 per store based on reports... people are already lined up at stores that don't open until noon in some places.

It sounds like midnight console launch will be a thing this year. Microsoft & Sony both held back units for in-store launches.

This is relevant to me since there's no way in hell I'll be dropping $220 on that expansion pack. I'll wait around for 10 minutes instead.

The season six patch for Modern Warfare was 56 GBs on PC, so I left it running while I went to work. Came home to find out that the game would not install properly on my 250 GB SSD...because there wasn't enough space. So I had to move it to another drive, finish the installation/repair, to be able to play. The final file size is 226 GBs, so theoretically I could move the entire folder back...but then would be right back with the same problem when the mid season patch comes out in a few weeks.

The file size for this game is absurd. I mean BFV (which I had to move to another drive to make room for MW) is 88 GBs installed. I don't play CoD's campaign or Spec Ops modes, so why I can't I unload those files? I know it's a little smaller for consoles, but it's still 25% of the default storage for recent PS4/XBOX 1 models. That's not sustainable, and I hope Activision gets their **** together moving forward.

I have to wait longer than that for updates every single time I touch my PS4 so that's probably not a big deal.

Activision is a small, indie billion dollar company. Cut them some slack, they're doing all they can

Yeah I believe the console version is around 130 GB. So about 100 gb less than PC but still completely ridiculous.

Taking a break from Spiderman after finishing the main story... Will come back for the dlc. Just didn't feel like more of the same.

Currently playing Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

This is straight up a Symphony of the Night clone, not surprisingly some of the people worked on both games... That isn't a bad thing though. It's a good game, albeit frustrating at times.

I loved Spider-Man until the general repetitiveness just became too much.

I still haven't beaten Matriarch in Gears 5 since I'm solo. I don't know how some do it, but I always make it to close to the end and bam, dead. It would help immensely if my wife would chip in and shoot out the ice for me, but there's zero chance of that every happening. Sucks, because the game has been enjoyable.

So a Mario battle royale? That sounds awesome. Damn I need a Switch.
