So I downloaded Madden 23 for fun again, and I am pretty close to just outright deleting it and swearing off Madden for a good while. It's a predictable trash heap when you play on the hardest difficulties. You can almost pinpoint when your guy is going to fumble or a DB is going to just jump 14 feet in the air to pick the ball off. Same with NHL really, when the game just decides your not getting the puck back from the computer until it scores a goal.

Just trash.

For you Hogwarts Legacy people out there... how many of you are on Playstation? If you're not, you missed my favorite quest of the game so far. When you buy the shop in Hogsmeade, you play the mission called "haunted hogsmeade" where the person selling you the shop sends you to a dungeon with a poltergeist that tries to drive you insane. It's incredible, and it's a playstation exclusive mission. It took me about 45 minutes or so, and it was a ton of fun.

We played on PS5. I remember that mission being pretty cool.

I'll never buy another one until I can create teams again. The most fun I had was replacing every team with joke franchises.

An interesting thought experiment. Mine would be:

Arizona Retirees
Atlanta Cokes
Baltimore Drivebys
Buffalo Snowplows
Carolina Moonshiners
Chicago Massacres
Cincinnati Futility
Cleveland River Fires
Dallas Posers
Denver Transplants
Detroit Condemned
Green Bay Frostbites
Houston Swamp Ass
Indianapolis Flyovers
Jacksonville Florida Men (logo is lifted truck with "truck nuts" on rear bumper and sign in window reading "I EAT ASS")
Kansas City Race Riots
Las Vegas Addicts
Los Angeles Pornstars
Los Angeles Botox
Miami Smugglers
Minnesota Alcoholics
New England Massholes
New Orleans Flashers
New York Birds (team logo is middle finger)
New York Shoplifters
Philadelphia Fentanyls
Pittsburgh Yinzers
San Francisco Poopers
Seattle Hipsters
Tampa Bay Strippers
Tennessee Rednecks
Washington Bribery

I mainly used cities that had no team. The only ones I remember are the North Dakota Nothing and the Idaho Final Solution. (This is before social justice when I was an edgelord)

if anybody is interested in a four hour video about Donkey Kong, Billy Mitchell's game play, and how to tell the difference between an arcade game and MAME, here ya go. Usually any video over 90 minutes loses my attention, but this had my attention the entire way through.

Or if four hours is too long, how about a 2+ hour video on the history of speedrunning Mike Tyson's Punch Out

Been playing Cyberpunk 2077. I know there was a giant mess at launch with bugs and it not working on older consoles, but a couple years later all of the bugs seem to have been worked out. The only bug I've encountered is that every once in a while when I summon my motorcycle, it falls out of the sky to land next to me rather than driving up. Which I find hilarious, and I wish would happen every time.

The game also looks great at 3440×1440 with all of the settings cranked to maximum.

Power Wash simulator was a free download for PS this month. It may be my wife's new favorite game.

My daughter just discovered that she can use her Xbox controller on her Surface for Roblox. Proud that she's graduated from KBM so quickly.

Some friends played this when it came out, and they said the only good part of it at launch was the character creation menu. This is where I learned the term "wang slider".

I hooked up an original PS1 this past week. I had RE Directors Cut that wouldn't load past the opening PS logo screen. Did the old trick of flipping over the PS1 and turned it on....and boom it played like normal. Forgot about that trick from back in the day.

Do you have a copy of Silent Hill?

I got the idea I wanted to go back and play them from the start. Tried to find a copy and OH MY GOD. $$$

I do not. Wish I did to play it. I know it’s super expensive now like you mentioned above. It’s crazy how random games become super expensive. I don’t remember that coming out late in the psx lifecycle so you would think plenty of copies should be floating around but I guess not.

I talked about this exact thing with a retro game shop owner on the Outer Banks. He swears it's because so many parents destroyed that particular game for being perceived as "Satanic". So fewer parents bought it, and other parents destroyed their kids copies. I don't buy into that but he was completely convinced.

We were playing burned games on a modded psx back when it was a new console. There must be a way to do it today.

Konami legacy titles!
I can't speak for other games of that generation, but for Silent Hill part of it comes down to the title being 'locked' to PS1, and that means physical media, and that means whatever physical media was replicated in 1999 or whatever. There's no morally-induced rarity, it's just a 30-year old game playable only on hardware you might not even be able to connect to a modern TV.

Another part of it is a fun (if only for me) inside baseball story.

When we were starting to program launch titles for PS Now in 2012-ish we had to ascertain if the development agreements for legacy titles on older platforms allowed us the ability to port games to new platforms/distribution channels without incurring any financial obligations over and above the porting costs. The first SH game was developed in-house as a sort of throw-away effort; there was no expectation that there'd ever be a SH2 much less a whole franchise, and so they weren't exactly buttoned up from a business affairs POV. As I remember it, part of why we were able to do remasters of SH2 and SH3 was because the goldmaster candidate source code for those titles had been, *ahem*, 'lost', and we made the argument that the amount of work that had to be done to get them squared away for release on that gen of consoles was more like a brand new game rather than a remaster, and so certain contractual financial triggers were... sidestepped. SH1 was, on a code level, intact and so we couldn't remaster it for a new platform/channel without owing people money. And Konami, particularly at that juncture in time, was super cheap.

Remember also at this point in time the Silent Hill IP had moved over to Kojima Productions. I recall there being rumblings Hideo-san was upset at the poor quality of the SH2&3 remaster, as his studio's name was now associated with the IP. I don't know if this was causal or correlative, but this was roughly when the relationship between Hideo-san and the company began to fracture. The KP SH game was ultimately cancelled more than two years into development. And the cancellation of the Kojima Silent Hill game came just a couple years after Konami bailed on Six Days In Fallujah after a similar waste of time and money. Just on those two titles, Konami spent something like $60 million on games they did not ultimately publish. Woot!

But we had a similar business affairs issue with the original Frogger; if we even wanted to license the IP it had to be on a quitclaim basis because we couldn't rep and warrant a clean chain of title. Many other developers and publishers of that pre-Y2K vintage are in the same boat with their titles. No one kept track of anything, stuff is lost forever.
