No one would accuse him of singling anyone out. Correct.

I love tif. He's entitled to his opinion. He happened to label a large percentage of this board as emotionally unstable. It was responded to appropriately and relatively civilly and I think we've all made peace with it.

Yeah, I agree. Shmenguin and tif had a pretty funny exchange, nothing to see here.

What I said was pretty outlandish and deliberately provocative, I certainly hope it wasn't taken as a serious thing.

I feel my emotions have destabilized in direct connection with your comment.

jk I think that's actually a legitimate opinion. My fiancee shares the same opinion, but my self-conscious butt got a 1ct excellent vs1 j anyways. it looks good, we're debt free, we're both happy. all is well

Emotionally stable and well put together adults realize that the ring is a symbol meant more to impress others than as any sort of tangible statement between the proposor and proposee. A diamond ring is literally the core of a #2 pencil with a mountain's worth of pressure applied to it and set into a metal band. Big woop.

The honeymoon will provide you a lifetime of memories and be a permanent marker of how important your relationship is. Also, you are not ever in your lifetime going to lose your honeymoon down the kitchen sink.

For the curious, our honeymoon cost about 12x what all three of our rings cost, combined. (Engagement, two wedding bands)
"Emotionally stable and well put together adults" <- Words that do not describe women when it comes to anything wedding related. Which is why you can get charged $250 for $6 worth of center piece, etc... and she will yell at you if you comment on it.

:scared: <- bride

:face: <- groom

She will spend $5000 on a dress that she will wear once, but you want to get a bigger tv and you are told that it is a stupid waste of money.
She will spend months and months planning and spend $20,000 on the ego stroke, er, wedding but you look to maybe buy a classic car and you are told that it is a mid-life crisis that you need to work through and there is no way you are getting that car.

There is a reason guys wear the same clothes to a wedding that they wear to a funeral.

Agree completely. No video for us.

And $3,000 in 1997 for a photographer was a lot.

Oh, and get a good DJ or band. A bad DJ can kill the festive mood quickly.[/quote]

A bad band is worse than a bad DJ. At least with a DJ you can pick your playlist and you can switch genres. Bands are often limited in what they can play. I went to a wedding last year with a $20k band and wished I could have swapped them out with a DJ.

There are many behaviors in life that I just can't account for. There is no logical reason why they happen.

People hiring wedding bands is one of those.

I think the only acceptable time to hire a band for a wedding is if you're having a reception cocktail hour or something and it's a little jazz band kind of thing. Beyond that, DJ everytime.

correct. you can either have the music played perfectly by the original artist. or you can spend MORE money and hope that a group of people performs a reasonable facsimile.

Me neither. My wife hates spending money on herself or frivolous things. Our wedding was cheap.

live music is exponentially better than prerecorded. as long as the band is talented. id much rather dance to live musicians playing Heatwave and Shout than listening to MP3s

and I think that Jim is [mostly] right. The Wedding Industrial Complex has become insane. Half of cable tv promotes it through reality shows that distort the true purpose of a wedding and confuse naive girls into believing a wedding day is *their* day.

I don't want an engagement ring, personally. So my honeymoon would definitely be more expensive.

Also have you guys really encountered hat many bride/groomzillas outside of reality shows? I've only ever met one woman and one groom that came remotely close.

ok, i see. i have no interest in dancing to that kind of music. i mean...i have very little interest in dancing in general, but if i must, it has to be contemporary, and composed for the purposes of people easily dancing to it. in short...i hate dancing to white people music*.

We considered a really good party band from the Philly nightclub scene but they wanted $5,500. Ended up going with the Trump Plaza casino DJ from AC for $700...back in the old days.
