I wish I could say I'm making this up, but they designed the circuit by lifting chunks out of existing tracks and piecing them together.

Can I borrow a towel? My car hit a water buffalo on the way over?

Kimi things:
Talking about wanting to do things that being an F1 driver won't allow:
"Don't you read your contract?" Kimi: "I don't care what it says."
"How's your motivation?" Kimi: "very poor. Maybe I never had it."
"Long term goal then?" Kimi: "I don't have one."

Can't say I've ever seen that platform in race trim. Neat.

Keeping in mind my latest hot take in the RIP thread about hyperbolic statements, this is legitimately one of the worst auto racing accidents I have ever seen in terms of pure brutality due to the physics involved. She is alive, which is exceptional.
@SophiaFloersch
Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into Surgery tomorow morning. Thanks to the @fia and @hwaag_official @MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me.
Thanks to everybody for the Supporting messages.
Update soon.

I wish there were video of the incident that caused it, because I have no idea how a car can end up like that.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
Can't see clearly, but if I had to guess I'd say rear wing or suspension failure. She apparently left the track at 172 mph.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
The still from the thumbnail looks like she's already completely turned around. There had to have been some contact no?
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
Reading some accounts, apparently she was sort of brake checked on a restart.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
If you watch that video all the way through it shows various fan captured videos. One of them shows her hitting the apex curbing and then ramping off a car and straight into the fencing. She gets so high so fast it looks like she must have taken off farther down the stretch, like Webber. But really she is just getting up when she enters the frame in the opening clip.
What she was doing at over 170 at the apex is a differnet issue of which I have no explanation.

I went back to rewatch and make sure my memory was correct. Didn't notice till today she was going backwards the whole way down the curbing, before she left the circuit. So that would explain how she was still moving so quickly at the apex...
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
Right, which is why I wanted to know how she ended up backwards.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
Yeah.
They were coming down the straight at full speed, trapped at 172mph.. A marshall stand put out a false yellow. A car ahead of her slammed on the brakes (wrong move by the driver, btw) and she contacted that car. Was turned around, proceeded down the curb backwards and struck the second car causing her to launch directly into the camera stand. Had the camera stand not been there she would be in low earth orbit still. Or, more likely, into the side of the hotel.

She clipped the right rear of a car at the previous bend. That implies she contacted with her left front, which is down in all the images I've seen. But I can't tell if it's already down when launches or if she knocked down scraping the barrier right before the shunt.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
Oh, there you go.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
I am not seeing the yellow flags that apparently prompted that guy to brake-stomp early.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
You're viewing the track from the wrong direction, but if you look to the black boxes mounted to the fences about 10ft up you can see the yellow flashing through a notch in the top of each.
The presumption is that since this was the first lap of a restart they might have forgotten to turn them off and Jehan Daruvala noticed them and brake checked. Guan Yu Zhou who was right behind them confirmed the flags and Jehan's sudden slow down.

Interesting.... the head of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) has revealed they want to reconfigure Monza in time for the track's centenary in 2022. Included in the plan:
- Removal of the Variante della Roggia (2nd chicane), making a flat out blast from the first chicane (Rettifilo), through Curva Grande all the way to the first Lesmo;
- Increasing the radius of the second Lesmo to make it a faster corner, increasing speeds into the Ascari Chicane;
- Reprofiling of the old banking to bring it back into use and potentially create a 10km circuit (likely for sports car/GT racing, not F1).
Without getting into the merits of any of these ideas, I just like the notion that someone's talking about making the fastest circuit even faster. That's a nice change in this age.
