Lots of fun. There was time left out there but for the first weekend with the car on a new track, and with a co-driver, I can't complain.

The thing I love most about EC is that every onboard I've ever seen makes it look like your driving a road of pure light.

Unpopular Opinion: Zanardi needs to find a rocking chair somewhere and not get out of it for 30 years.

Alex Zanardi won the first motor race I ever attended in person. You take your..... erm, take.... and sit in the corner for a while and reevaluate your choices.

Dude has lived an incredible couple of lives. There’s no shame in listening to what the forces of nature are trying to tell him. I always felt the same way about Greg Moore. Dude got ran over by a granny, and was so banged up they had to let him have a special practice session to prove he could still wheel it, and died later that day. Sometimes the world is trying to tell you something...

A good friend of mine was at Fontana that day, and she said she's never felt so....... weird..... as when they lowered the flags around the track to half staff, with like half of the race left to run.
Racing is such a capricious thing. The first few laps of that race, another driver lost it in T2, and he walked away from his shunt. On the restart, Moore lost it in the same spot, sort of following the other guy's skid marks, but he cartwheeled into the wall head first at 150 Gs and pancaked his skull.
That said, Pineapple might not have a say in that rocking chair thing.

I just did a quick Google, and found a Sotheby's auction for a signed Ayrton Senna Bell crash hat from 1988 that sold for $102,000. "The signature is believed to be authentic."
Also saw an auction for a TIE Fighter helmet worn on-screen in the first Star Wars movie that fetched $238,000, but I figured you wouldn't appreciate that as much.

Well, the staggering thing for me is the Chaz helmet is a replica. It's not even 'game worn' or even team issued.
This is not the greatest helmet in the world, no.
This is just a tribute.

Oh, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with you. I just wanted a pretext for posting the bit about the TIE Fighter helmet.

In other news, Bernie Ecclestone (age 89) became a dad again today. His youngest grandchildren are only 5 year old.

Thompson is a bit of a big balls track, I didn't wreck but gave the event lead a heart attack by almost doing so.
Unfortunately three competitors did crash out by hitting the NASCAR wall.
I willed the SRT4 to a podium. In a group of 5 I beat a MINI Cooper S and a 996 911. Not too shabby. I got smoked by a Focus RS. A car that has 110(!) horsepower on me. Talk about bookending the class.
I am really excited to make the video. Real powderkeg of a course.

Looking forward to seeing the video, good on ya.
The Austrian GP was hugely eventful. Alex Albon should be allowed to punch Lewis Hamilton in the nose.

I didn't think it was possible to like Lewis Hamilton any less, but, here we are.
Even the announcers couldn't find an out for Hamilton so you know it was egregious.

Ouch. Congrats on surviving Thompson, looking forward to the video.
Also, you could see that one coming with Lewis and Alex. Alex squeezes him there on the opening lap, and you had to figure Lewis would try to return the favor.
Difference is Alex had position to do it on lap 1 and Lewis didn’t.

I will be at Gingerman next weekend (18th-19th) if you want to slip away. It doesn't start until noon on Saturday, extra time to get there.

Martin Brundle is one of my favorite people ever in motor racing. But apply his analysis of the latest Albon-Hamilton incident to something like Prost-Senna at Suzuka 1990............ woof....

I originally go off at ~60mph but by the time I'm facing the wall I've scrubbed most of the speed.

I saw an article that called Chaz's move "a video game maneuver."
The second race at Road America for Indy was a **** show, too. Will Power is the new Maldonado.

He won the only Vegas street race that Champ Car ran. We went up to the in-laws' place that weekend, and when they picked me up from the track my MIL was like "We saw on TV that the winning driver is named 'Will Power'. That's not real, is it?"

Also, while it does not make Leclerc's move anything less than pure stupidsville, he at least can own up to it and call himself out. Vettel is always like "What was he thinking?!!?" and blaming everyone else for his own faults. I think he and Chucky have come together for like three consecutive races now, right? That's............ woof.

It was a very bad result. They had a bunch of new aero and structural updates they NEEDED to test, if nothing else, and they got through something like three turns before both cars were destroyed. Jesus.
Motorsports (non-NASCAR)
I say NEEDED because there are back to back races in Italy this year, including Ferrari's 1000th, and it's possible they leave with zero points.

Minor quibble: 'Turn 2' at Austria is not.
I've always heard that from an engineering perspective it is only considered a turn if the driver has to modulate speed (either by lifting or applying brakes). I never got why that little kink on Pine Ave at Long Beach is considered 'Turn 7'.
All things considered, I'm in a good spot if this is what I am complaining about.
