The F1 thread at the other place tended to be a catchall for non-NASCAR motor racing discussions. That's the intention here.

Oh god a thousand times yes, thank you.

So excited I can't think of anything to say. *giddy*

I might take in TUSC @ Road America this fall, anyone else going? Fly in, tif, I'll get you a BMW car corral ticket for your effort.

at the risk of subverting the thread - more racing in general than NASCAR specifically since the touring series will never go there:

Unclear if they will finish the new Dominion Raceway this year -- it is the new project some 45 miles south of the former Old Dominion Speedway that last raced in 2012 and as of February of last year all improvements were gone, only thing left was the banking and the pavement. The new one is in Thornburg VA.

When I lived in NoVa we used to go to Old Dominion all the time. I didn't know they were tearing it down.

Yeah - I have photos of it from a year ago when the grandstands, walls, fences, everything was gone. It was a very sad sight. They did it with ZERO announcement in advance - they simply never opened for 2013.

Several of the dirt tracks in West Virginia (Pennsboro, I-79, West Virginia Motor Speedway) have closed recently.

Latrobe Speedway looks like it'll be open this year, which given its history is pretty surprising. The last I remember the owner (prior?) was putting concrete in the banking so people couldn't use it.

I clicked on an autsport.com article this morning that opened with the line "Manor Formula 1 duo Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi". I swear that was the first time I had seen their names.

Jann Mardenborough, one of the GT: Academy winnners, went airborne at the Ring and went into the crowd. It's kind of amazing how rare these events are in modern motorsport but it's a sobering reminder of what is possible even if you're just spectating. He went airborne at Flugplatz and blew over into the crowd. Really sad and bizarre. This was the opening round of the VLN Endurance Championship so everyone was likely in high spirits. Very sad.

Good god. When tif said he went perpendicular to the track that's not what I thought he meant. I thought he barrel rolled, I've never seen a GT car do that. That's Mark Webber LMP territory.

:(

I've seen cars flip before, but I don't know that I've ever seen one basically reverse sail for that kind of distance.

Indy is back tomorrow (after missing the opening event last month).

I'm going to try to pay closer attention this year. Maybe even attend the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers this summer.

Malaysian GP:
-Might be an anomaly but I'm really happy to see Vettel take the fight to Mercedes. Seems like Mercedes made this race difficult on Mercedes though. That extra pit stop killed them.
-Vettel lapping all of RBR, oof.
-Kimi had a quiet but effective race, especially from 15th.
-Feel bad for Alonso, but he has to know what he was getting into with a new engine supplier right? Not sure why a guy would go through a few years of growing pains in his twilight years.
-Hearing Rosberg wet himself on the radio about Vettel was great.
-Grosjean lulz
-Maldonado bailed out by the SC.
-Hamilton is such a baby, lol. He's kind of like Vettel from a few years ago.
-Bottas, nice move on the last lap there.
Also, lol:

Highly enjoyable race. Very different from Oz.
I've seen drivers less excited after winning titles. Outstanding drive by Vettel, and Raikkonen did extremely well to race up to 4th from dead last. Looks like Ferrari is for real.

Was a little bummed that hasmaldonadocrashedtoday.com did not give him credit for the incident that got him a puncture.

lol, i meant to check that site but forgot.
I forgot till it was over that Kimi ran a whole lap without a tire and still came back. I believe that was before the safety car, but still, solid effort.

So wait, did you guys know about that site before or after I posted it in the F1 thread 2 weeks ago?

I think it's a hilarious concept.
I agree about Raikkonen. Some drive from him. Appears this year that Ferrari has their **** together. Their car last year was oversteer-y and tail happy, but so far it looks like they might have something going for them.

Also, what may be worse than Vettel lapping the Red Bulls, the Red Bulls finished behind both Toro Rosso cars. The juniors beat the seniors.

While on the topic of Red Bull, what was up with their brakes? Looked like they had the bias set heavily at the front, and fairly aggressive, while everyone else appeared to have a fairly balanced/less crappy setup.

The theory from the broadcast was that they were setup for wet qual and forgot to adjust it, but that seems insane.

I've never seen brake dust in that amount that didn't result in a blown disc.

Yeah, I heard them say that but I'm not exactly buying it, unless it's some mass conspiracy by Red Bull in their fight against Renault to have a bad car and blame it on the engine supplier

I learned of it through the el gippy F1 thread, whoever it was that posted it there. It's hysterical; the admin updated the site live during Melbourne.... Maldo wasn't even out of the car yet and the screen said "YES!".

Two observations:

RBR switched brake suppliers for 2015, and this was the first time they ran in super hot conditions.

The children (Sainz Jr and Verstappen) have been impressive.
