Current IndyCars look and sound almost preposterously goofy..... but then, you can pretty much say the same thing about F1 cars. I'm also not a fan of the 1.5 mile ovals like Texas and Iowa, altho it looks like they are the last of that breed left on the schedule. Everything else......... is CART 2.0.
Iowa is actually 7/8 of a mile. Shorter than Milwaukee.
Texas is the lone IRL track basically.

It's a shame Scott Speed sucked out loud.
I have a beautiful picture of him in the TR at the Indy GP one year. So nice my wife tried to take it to work to hang in her office, but her office mate's nixed that idea.

Will Power still has to be one of the best sports names ever, right behind Dick Trickle.
He won the one and only Champ Car Vegas GP. We stayed at the in-laws that weekend, and when I got back from the race Sunday afternoon, my MIL said, "The news says the race was won by a man named 'Will Power'. That's a joke, right?"

So we had a huge potluck today, and the whole office has been effectively done with work since about noon. Looking at Google Maps, I see that the current satellite image of Sears Point Raceway was taken during the Indy Car event, and might actually have been during the race itself. How fun.

There are a ton of cars in the parking lot for it to be Friday. Could be Saturday, I s'pose.

Hmmm... the cars look pretty closely bunched together. If it were a practice session, I would expect everyone to be more spread out. It looks like the cars are racing. Also, there isn't much of a crowd in the grandstands, but if it were just practice I would expect pretty much no one to be there.

You can see the IRL logo

IRL logo, Team Penske, TCGR, Firestone, SMP, Chevrolet. In the support paddock outside turns 7, 7a you can see Pirelli and the Target hospitality area.

It was shot on Saturday August 23rd, 2014 during the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.
Google Earth Pro has the Imagery Date. You could nail down the lap if you pulled the timing and scoring and cross referenced the positions of various cars relative to each other if you were so inclined.

One thing I was confused about. Is it not against the rules to drive over the pit out white line to gain a position?

Image

I instantly spotted it but nobody has said anything. A few fractions of a second after the image above Rosberg went completely over the white line to drivers right. This was as a car was coming out of pit lane, no less.

My understanding of the rules is that the while line at exit is merely there to define the limit of the track for cars rejoining the circuit. It has no bearing at all on traffic already on the circuit at speed. If there is a rule limiting that, it's news to me.

The only circuit where I think the pit markers actually have any impact on the racing surface is the pit entry in Brazil, because drivers habitually cut that final kink at top speed right where cars coming in are dropping anchor. So the FIA mandates that drivers stay to the track side of the pit in line if they are staying out.

My brain is telling me Schumacher did a bad thing with a pit line once but I'll be damned if I can place it. Monaco maybe.

I just learned that Ricciardo will be plugging in his 4th ICE for Barcelona. He won't be able to use any more engines for the rest of the season without incurring a grid penalty.

Because that's what the fans want.

Well, he nearly murdered his brother and his ex-teammate by squeezing them almost into the pitwall as they tried to pass. The Barrichello incident attracted attention because the pit exit was right there, and they both drove through.

Yowza....

PWC penalizes half of Long Beach field
Pirelli World Challenge officials have handed out a plethora of penalties following the chaotic and caution-filled race at Long Beach. In all, 20 teams were punished, totalling $61,000 in fines alone.

Race winner Olivier Beretta was penalized for three infractions, two of which were called 'driving conduct' and the last being 'movement prior to the start.' The most severe penalties reached fines of $5,000, starting from the pit lane, and a deduction of 40 driver points.

Johnny O'Connell went on a tirade ripping guys who use simulators as gamers that need to put their controllers down. He then proceeds to get docked more points than gamer poster-boy BH.

The FIA: "We want teams to use staggeringly complex "power units" with energy recovery systems, because technology, but we limit you to X number of them, because costs."

If you want to reduce costs, how about making the engines simpler to begin with? :face:

I think it was Jackie Stewart, but someone quipped that instead of young boys putting posters up of Sebastian Vettel or Lewis Hamilton on their walls they really should be supporting the engine builders and head mechanics. In other words F1 was not about drivers anymore, but who had the best engine shop.

Yeah, Bryan didn't have a good race. But he's not alone there. I haven't even seen it yet because of their shitty(ish) TV contract.

I'm (slowly) building a BMWCCA SE36 car. One of the fun things about racing old platforms is you can choose to emulate old liveries. Most E30 guys to Warsteiner, and E36 guys like Fina. I've thought about doing a lot of different things but keep coming back to the early '90s BTCC Harvey Listerine livery:

Image

A few years ago I was collecting images of E36 BTCC cars, I found like, 3. Now there is tons of hi-res stuff out there. Thank you, internet.
