The serious answer is to prevent Justin Wilson type deaths.

It would not have saved Bianchi. Or Senna.

Maldonado tended to overdrive the car, but he wasn't that bad of a driver, at least when compared to the cohort of historical rent-a-riders one could consider. Maldonado looks like Jim frikkin' Clark compared to someone like Hiro Matsushita.

Edit: Even the board knows that Hiro Matsushita was Matsushita.

An oldie but a goodie. Sabine Schmitz from P-last to P4 in one lap of the Ring.

NHRA season has begun. Made it to qualifying yesterday and a full run today. Lots of personal records were set today. Straight track, nitro blown engines. Made it home in time to lather off the track smell to take the wife to dinner.

Gotta love those that chase the need for speed.

NHRA is strange for me where I'm super impressed by the engineering and what they're accomplishing, but I chuckle at calling them 'drivers'.

Do they still run at Brainerd? Maybe I'll go check it out some summer.

Brainerd is on the schedule. Early August. From what I read about the event, there are attractions galore to keep you busy besides the race.

100 MPH under 1 second for a full blown nitro car. 300+ MPH at the finish.

Speed TV used to have Pinks as a TV show. Race your car against another for the pink slip. Race light to light is so American Graffiti in Americana culture that can not, will not be denied.

10,000 horsepower engine with a driver that has to steer a rocket down a track.

They call racing drivers 'pilots' in many other cultures, and it always gave me a chuckle. But it's truly appropriate to use that term for a dragster.

Nigel Roebuck has apparently had a nasty heart scare and is recovering in the hospital. Get well soon, Nige.

DENVER, N.C. (February 18, 2016) - Two-time and defending IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar prototype champion João Barbosa is recuperating after sustaining a minor fracture in his left wrist on Monday. The injury was sustained in a non-racing incident in Ormond Beach.

Barbosa was demonstrating to his two sons how to operate their hoverboards inside the family's Ormond Beach residence, when Speed, the family dog, interrupted the presentation. The defending Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring champion used his quick-reaction racer reflexes and took evasive action to miss the ecstatic Yorkie. The Barbosa family is happy to announce that Speed was unharmed in the incident.

"It's unfortunate that I'm not going to be able to test our No. 5 Mustang Sampling Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype at Sebring International Raceway next week," said the Portuguese driver. "Fortunately for me I've got the best race team with Action Express Racing and excellent co-drivers with Christian (Fittipaldi) and Filipe (Albuquerque). I'll be there to share in each debrief session and review the data with the team; it'll be a terrific opportunity to mentally prepare for the challenge of 12 hours.

"My wife is tremendously talented and artistically gifted, she's already helped to brand my cast with the Mustang Sampling logo, and after my demonstration our kids now fully understand that the hoverboards are best used outside, and not around Speed."

Conveniently, the family was already scheduled to meet Wednesday with the orthopedic specialist to have the cast removed from Barbosa's oldest son Rodrigo's arm. To which the elder Barbosa replied: "It saved us one trip that way, we already had the doctor so we got one cast removed and one added."

The IMSA champion is scheduled to have his cast removed prior to the 64th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and will be a full-go for the team, who are seeking a second consecutive victory in North America's longest running endurance competition.

Kubica was also told to lose weight when he drove for BMW. More than one commentator suggested he start with his nose.

Qualifying will remain as a one-hour session, split into three segments, but drivers must be on track throughout each part until they get knocked out.

Details on how the new qualifying format will work exactly have yet to be decided, but the general outline has been agreed.

Q1 will now last 16 minutes and after seven minutes the slowest driver will take no further part in the session.

Every 90 seconds thereafter, the slowest will be knocked out until there are only 15 drivers remaining.

After a short break, Q2 will commence and last 15 minutes with the slowest driver eliminated after six minutes.

As was the case in Q1, the slowest driver at the time will be knocked out at 90-second intervals until eight remain.

Q3 will last 14 minutes and see the process repeated again with the slowest taking no further part after five minutes.

The next five drivers will drop out at 90-second intervals leaving the final two drivers to fight it out for pole in the final 90 seconds.
As always, F1 is trying out-complicate what should be a straightforward process. This will be almost impossible to make sense of at the track, and I don't anticipate it being any fun on TV, either. Following along on T&S is now almost mandatory.

Why not just make the qual results for each round be the average MPH over the course of the session? That'd keep everyone engaged fully for every session.

Here's a thought: One 1-hour session, 12 lap max, no parc ferme rules. He who shall be fastest doth sittest on pole.

All this mess just tells me the best method is single car runs. Once run each. Fastest car wins pole.

For fan service this is the only way that keeps cars on track for a full hour.
