I was actually surprised they didn’t edit the f-word out of that video. I vaguely recall a minor cancel Dire Straits viral thing a few years ago, after Mark Knopfler was out touring and doing press for one of his recent solo albums. (His solo albums are really good, btw. Not a lot of guitar histrionics, more laid back/singer songwriter than rockers).

I’m sure tifosi77 will correct me if I’m wrong, but Knopfler was quoting a meathead he overheard in an appliance store during one of Dire Straits tours in the early 80s.

That is also my recollection of the story. He was having a fridge delivered or something.

Written and performed by Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits' Scottish-born lead singer, songwriter, lead guitarist and co-producer, ''Money for Nothing'' is the first major hit to take aim at worship of rock-video stars and the envy and resentment that are the inevitable backwash of such adulation. The song acknowledges one of the most disturbing aspects of music-videos: the fact that by watching performers lip-synch to their own records, it is possible for an audience to entertain the illusion that the musicians don't really work, since the job of making music is reduced to mere posing.

The song owes its immediacy to the fact that its offensive language -deleted for Top 40 radio air play -was taken from dialogue that Mr. Knopfler actually overheard.

''I was in an appliance store on the Upper East Side in which all the TV sets were tuned to MTV,'' he recalled the other day. ''A couple of guys who worked there were discoursing on the acts that were appearing. They had a hard-hat, macho mentality. I went to the front of the store and asked for a piece of paper so I could write down what they were saying, because I was intrigued by their notion that these musicians were impossibly rich without actually having to work.''

Inevitably, the irony of the song has sailed over some people's heads, including some reviewers, and there have been complaints in the homosexual press that the song condones the use of bigoted language.

So having finally seen Hamilton, I'm kind of loving how much the parleys between Jefferson and Madison are musically so similar to You're Welcome from Moana. (Although I guess technically it would be the other way around)

For those who listened to the X this weekend, they released the full list of the top 420 songs of the 90s. You can probably guess what #1 was and I doubt you'd get an argument from anyone about that selection.

I really try not to put too much thought into these all-time lists since they're mostly subjective. Most people don't give a **** about if song #250 was a better song than #251 or #281.

Not surprisingly, Nirvana (17 songs), STP and Pearl Jam (16 songs each), took up 49 spots, or about 11.6% of the chart.

Alice In Chains and the Chili Peppers had 12 each. Rage and Metallica both had 10 songs on the list. The Clarks had two songs, with Cigarette listed as high as 234.
