Went to the Rancid and Pennywise show last weekend. It was awesome on multiple fronts.

If you go to their FB page, I'm one of the (as of right now) 788 heart emoji reactions to that post.

I like how Nate's shirt has a pocket.

for $23, it's going to be hard to pass up seeing one of the best guitar players out there right now, just a little rough that it's a couple days after phish.

He was in that international version of The Weight with Robbie Robertson and Ringo. I had ever heard of him, and he's from a few hours away from me. Excellent guitar player.

The Sturgill Simpson album is excellent. It's really heavy sounding, with synths. Very different from his other two albums.

The super deluxe version of Abbey Road came out last week? Evidently, it's the 50th anniversary of the original's release. Not much new here, just slightly remastered sound and a few new outtakes. But what I really like is single track of the Abbey Road "medley" of short songs on the second side - You Never Give Me Your Money through The End - as one MP3 track, so it's perfect for playlists.

Been really ******* around with some old school country for the first concentrated length of time in my life...Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Jimmie Rodgers, Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, etc. I do not listen to current country music hardly at all, but my interest was piqued by the notion that old country was white man's blues...I gotta say, I'm really enjoying it...it's relaxing...it's musically simple and it's thematically simple: love, loss, and fondness for home...

This little kick has proven fruitful for the last week or so...open to recommendations in this line if anyone else digs 40's -50's country stuff...

My life the last three years has basically been a cheap knock off c&w song, so I think I'll stick to the new Ken Burns documentary.

I saw the video of a couple of days ago of him falling in Charlotte. I love Phil Collins/Genesis and man is it sad to see the health problems he's had the last decade or so. Genesis is a band, much like I did with the Stones this summer, that I would pay a premium to see before they would have gotten too old to tour.

My man! You picked a great place to start. Obviously you know all the big names...George Jones, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, etc.

Might I recommend the "other" Hank, Hank Snow? Born and raised in Crosby country, Nova Scotia. He is also the artist that persuaded the Grand Ole Opry directors to allow Elvis to perform on stage, introduced him to Colonel Tom Parker, and actually was Elvis' first manager (along with Parker). Unfortunately, the evil genius Parker pretty quickly cut Snow out...makes me wonder if Elvis would have lived a longer life without Parker cracking the whip for his whole career.

Mikey, you literally listed the topics for Ken Burns' first few episodes of his Country Music documentary I talked about above. If you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend it.

I don't think you can go wrong with Johnny Cash, to be honest.

Phil Collins completely blew away all expectations I had last night. I've seen a couple hundred shows in my time and this one was top notch. Production and sound was incredible. He sounded fantastic, the band was amazing. Sold out crowd was older, but they found a way back again. What a show!

Glad to hear that. He was in Charlotte Sunday night (where he fell) and I was on the fence about going, mostly because of the price and how recent concerts sounded on YouTube, and ended up not going.

I'd love to see a Genesis reunion tour, but not sure he has another big tour left in him. Some chatter from Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks about it recently, too.

On the country front, I very much enjoy the outlaw-country genre. Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe, Steve Earle, and Billy Joe Shaver would be more classic examples of the genre, and artists like Lucinda Williams, Nikki Lane, Ryan Bingham, Chris Knight, and The White Buffalo would be more current examples.

Unfortunately, while class outlaw does get airplay, most of the newer artists rarely if ever show up on commercial radio, and I was completely unaware of the scope of country music out there until I first signed up for XM satellite radio many years ago and found the "Outlaw Country" channel (currently channel 60). I used to say that I hated country music, but what I really disliked was mainstream pop country, which IMO is cookie-cutter garbage. There's a whole other world of outlaw country/Americana/country rock out there if one goes looking for it.
