Good times early this morning: to "help" get my 15 year old out of bed, after sleeping through 2-3 alarms, I put on one of his vinyl records. Loudly. I put on "After the Gold Rush" which leads off with "Tell Me Why."
I go across the hall to wake up the oversleeping 13 year old and start singing the song to wake his ass up. By the middle of the first verse, I find that my older son and I are harmonizing that song. Pretty cool, as that album is also a favorite of my dad's.
Of course, the 13 year old called it hippie trash.

Love this. My 14 year old stole my bluetooth turntable and about 20 records, plus she has a bunch of her own, mostly Taylor Swift and Harry Styles but you take the good with the badGood times early this morning: to "help" get my 15 year old out of bed, after sleeping through 2-3 alarms, I put on one of his vinyl records. Trips to the record stores in town are great bonding moments. Plus now I am looking at better bluetooth turntables for Dad. My Pro-Ject is downstairs in the basement which is cold this time of year.

I thought Conor Oberst was cancelled?

The 2013 allegation? If I remember correctly, the accuser recanted and said she made up 100% of the claim. Conor then sued her for libel but I don't remember what happened to that case.I thought Conor Oberst was cancelled?

I'm always curious about comments like this where legends are described as not having talent... what do you mean by that?Neil young, Beatles and Dylan. Just all fine. Not much talent. Interesting
I'm not a music connoisseur by any means, but it just strikes me that people/bands such as the three you listed are all-timers (whether you consider it warranted or not... they are) have a lot of talent.

I'm more shocked by that comment than MS or whatever trash state removing holocaust books from their school. They are all history. They are all iconic legends that changed the world for the better through their art.I'm always curious about comments like this where legends are described as not having talent... what do you mean by that?Neil young, Beatles and Dylan. Going with the theme of their talent is undeniable, got the new Dave's Picks vol 41 5/26/77 dead show from Baltimore and ooh boy is it a ripper. Got the may 77 box set for Christmas and my house has been rocking non stop.

I should also add that I completely get if any of those musicians are not your scene, I would never tell someone who they should enjoy listening to, but you can't deny their talent and impact on the world

I still listen to Bright Eyes and Death Cab For Cutie pretty regularly.

Emo is too broad of a category to say best and worst of it. We're currently into 5th wave emo, and some of that stuff is really really good (and some of it is really really bad).
I'd say for tops you could look at
the 90's: Jimmy eat world was tops. No one can convince me otherwise.
00's was really the hayday of emo, so take your pick/subgenre: Brand New, My Chemical Romance, Death Cab, Fall out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard, Paramore, The Used, Coheed and Cambria, Panic at the Disco, and I'm sure a million others that I didn't mention
10's into today: I don't know, really. Twenty one pilots? I kind of stopped listening to modern music and just kept listening to the same sh*t I did in high school and college.
I did start listening to a playlist called "fifth wave emo" from Kelsie Herzog (she looks pretty much like what you'd expect and gen z emo kid to look like... ). And a lot of it is pretty good. Some bad, just like the list above from the 00's. There's some bands there I love, there's some bands there I hate.

I would say there's no top of emo lol. Largely agree with C2I his post though. Actually I think Dashboard and Bright Eyes were probably the lowest points of my music life - but then I veered off into Screamo and Death Metal, etc.
