I don't know. I haven't really branched out from Phish for the jam stuff. I like some GD but that's about it.
Phish has a strong root in classic rock so even the long jams (normally) stay rock-y. Some of their space stuff is where I start to get lost, unless it fits really well. A lot of current jam bands tend to lean more toward that spacy electronic vibe, which I'm not a huge fan of.

Been playing Herbie Hancock all night. I am very entertained.
How did I not know he did a whole album of Joni songs about 10 years ago? One of the best things I have heard in a long time.

My favorite pop record of the year:

I've listened to 22,849 minutes of music on Spotify this year. I thought it'd be much higher than that.

Anyone ever listen to The Struts? They opened for Foo Fighters last week in SacTo, and they were pretty great.
And they brought the singer guy up for Under Pressure

In person, it sounded like someone continued playing the bridge chords during the chorus reprise in Learn To Fly. (Which is fun, cos the bridge has four chords and the chorus only has three) But watching videos from the show, I think maybe my ears were playing tricks on me.
Every time I've seen Foo Fighters or Chevy Metal (and I was wearing my CM tee to the show, cos of course I was), it has a been a 'home' show; once in Long Beach, and three times at the Forum, plus the CM gigs at bars and the Conejo Valley festival. So those were always special gigs. They'd have a guest list of 1,000 people at the Forum, and you're likely to be at the bar with the band's spouses at a CM show. That's decidedly not the case in Cowtown. This was just another night on the road, the day after a show in goddamn Fresno. So I was curious to see how they'd play it.
It was no different. They fcking crushed, even if Dave's voice was a little crispy towards the end of the set. They played Let It Die, my favorite Foo song, which is only the second time I've heard them do it. They didn't play La Dee Da from the new record, which was a let down. I'm usually one of those guys who dodints when bands that have been around for a while insist on playing new material at the expense of older hits (I'm looking at you, Iron Maiden). But in this case the new album is really good, and I would've happily traded in maybe Breakout, or Arlandria, or even Monkey Wrench for La Dee Da. And if you're going to brag about playing songs from 'all the records', play songs (plural) from all the records. They only played one song from each off FF (This Is A Call) and In Your Honor (Best Of You). I've never heard Weenie Beanie or I'll Stick Around live, and imo those are the best songs on the first record.
But I got to see Grohl play drums for the first time, so that was neat. (I don't know if you watched the Under Pressure video, but when he got behind the kit, the first thing he played was the fill from In The Air Tonight, so that's the first thing I heard Dave Grohl drum in person, yo) And because it was not a too-cool-for-school LA crowd, there were a lot more people wearing Foo gear than I'm used to seeing.
Here's the setlist from the show: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/foo-figh ... 00973.html

I watched the Under Pressure video...I didn't realize how much Dave smokes (I also didn't realize he drank from a champagne bottle during the show )

Should clarify we also saw FF at the Bottlerock festival in May. But that was their first US gig in 2 1/2 years, and they had a pop-up merch shop in Napa for the weekend selling FF-branded wine (along with the usual slate of tees and such). So it, too, falls into the 'special gig' category.Solid review Tif.....

Josh Homme kicked a photographer in the face at a show the other night. He posted a lame apology afterwards, and then recorded a more "heartfelt" one yesterday. He was acting strangely at the show, cutting himself, calling the audience retards, yelling "Muse sucks" (Muse opened or headlined the show), and so on. What a weirdo.

Also, in other news, the new U2 album sucks. Like pretty much everything they've done in the last 25 years or so. But Rolling Stone gives it a 4.5 star rating and proclaims it a top five album of the year. I guess there wasn't a new Mick Jagger or Rolling Stones album out this year.
Year end lists are bad, but when you are a music magazine and list the top ten music books of the year but don't include the universally well-received biography about your founder because it makes him look bad....then your list is invalid.
I haven't read it yet, but it sounds really good. One tidbit is how Jann Wenner wanted to date Paul Simon's girlfriend back in the 70s, so Rolling Stone never covered Simon in a positive light. Rolling Stone missed the boat on punk, because Wenner and his hippie ilk editors "didn't get it." And so on. Fascinating.

Other than at a doctors office or whatever, I haven't read RS since I was in HS. It was pretty (musically) conservative at the time - dare I say, stuck in the past.

I bought a "lifetime subscription" for $50 back in 2003, which turns out to be a 50 year subscription - the label says it expires in 2053.
I read more of the long form political articles than music stuff these days. And I doubt I'll get another 10 years out of it anyway.

I subscribed to RS in high school and through college. Peter Travers is generally the film critic with whom I tend to agree the most, and PJ O'Rourke is a goddamn national treasure.

I agree on both accounts. O'Rourke doesn't write for them any longer, which sucks. I need to re-read Parliament of Whores soon.

Oh, I didn't realize PJ stopped writing for RS.

He hasn't written for them in years. Matt Taibbi and Tim Dickinson do most of the political writing there now. Both are good, but not Safire-O'Rourke level (or style really).

RS has the new U2 album at #3 in their Album of the Year list. Not even Uncut is that stubbornly unhip.

Oh, just noticed DG mentioned that above.
