I think the issue is more "artists have figured out what sells so everyone just has the same 2 or 3 chord progressions" as opposed to, really, anything else.
Music Thread
The issue is people looking in wrong places.

Isn't it because all these pop songs are written by the same guy in one of the Scandinavian countries?

Yes.

As far as I can tell, all kids that listen to "alternative" stuff, is now weird soundcloud rap music like the Island Boys. Then everyone else just listens to like Taylor Swift and BTS.

I think it began to decline with the end of local radio stations. You have corporate interests creating radio playlists in NYC or LA for stations in Iowa and New Hampshire. Now, very few people listen to broadcast radio of any sort.

Hmm...that's an underrated point. I remember when there were a ton of local radio stations, but now they are all a part of massive media conglomerates like Cumulus, iHeartMedia, etc.I think it began to decline with the end of local radio stations. It's a combination of factors, but the main thing to remember is none of them would matter if the crap cookie-cutter stuff isn't what people were willing to pay for. Music companies aren't putting out junk because they like junk. They're doing because that's what makes them money.

Steely was fabulous tonight. Not the same without Becker but as you would expect Fagen has surrounded himself with great musicians.
Surprise highlight for me was they led off with Night by Night. Disappointment was they didn’t play Josie.

I have always liked this song, it came along the year after I graduated high school when I was in a pretty dark and angry phase. Watching these two experience it (genuinely, I assume) for the first time had me in tears again:

Pretty cool playlist someone put together

Probably. This is the only one I ever watched. Now I'm getting recommendations for other folks doing it for the same song and they look a little suspect. These "first time hearing" reaction videos are all pretty much bullshit, right?
As for that song specifically, I always thought it was cool that Trent Reznor basically said "Yeah, great job, that's pretty much not my song anymore" after he heard the Cash version.

Yep, Reznor's respect for Cash was great.

Yeah, it really was. A few striking things about it: very few tattoos in the crowd (compared to today), a field full of mostly white boys yelling the n-word during DMX's set, and of course no cell phones waving around in the air.
