Wasn't he having lung issues recently?
Yup, all the smoking messed up his breathing pretty bad.

It's 2 1/2 weeks away but if you want something to do the Saturday before Christmas (12/21) my band, Jimmy Mac and the Attack, are playing a Christmas party at Moondogs in Blawnox from 8p-12a. If you've never been, Moondogs is a legendary venue that, to this day, still hosts national touring acts. We're playing with LSD (the band, not the hallucinogen). $7 at the door and it goes to charity.

We're a smokin' blues and classic rock band. We play anything from Albert King, SRV, Albert Collins, and Ray Charles to Jimi Hendrix, CCR, and The Doors. Our harmonica player is one of the best in the country. He's worth the price of admission by himself.

so if you would have told me in 1984 that Henry Rollins is gonna be onstage singing Rise Above with Cyndi Lauper and Cyndi will have a bright yellow mohawk... I'll be honest, I'm not sure what my answer would have been.

Just found out about a group called The Olivia Tremor Control. Their album, Black Foliage: Animation Music, Vol. 1, is something else. Lo-fi, with a heavy, heavy influence from the psychedelic pop sounds of the 60s, specifically the Beatles' Revolver/White Album, with some Beach Boys Pet Sounds/Smile-era mixed in for good measure. If you're gonna be ape-ing a sound, you could do a lot worse than those reference points.

Take those 2-3 minute pop songs and mix them with a heavy dosage of sonic experimentation (oftentimes within the songs themselves), and you're left with what has to one of the better (or at the very least, underrated) albums of the 90s. The traditional songs can stand alone, but they really benefit within the context of the album.

I think Dusk at Cubist Castle is considered their ~best album. My first exposure to them was their singles collection, which I like much more. Love Athena and Beneath the Climb were the standouts for me.

Yeah. Of the two, I prefer Black Foliage since the pop hooks are stronger (whenever they appear, at least).

Have yet to listen to Singles, but certainly will get around to it soon.

I couldn't find the old Christmas Carol thread, but I recently discovered the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas album on Spotify. Man, that is a good listen. I could listen to them all day.

Been listening to this all day. Fantastic. I got the Pink Floyd rarities box set a few years ago, and it sounds a lot like their Syd Barrett unreleased stuff. And the Beach Boys. But it's from 1999? Very cool. Thanks for sharing!

last week at the phish show, we were treated to a pretty awesome cover of Syds Terrapin. It was quite enjoyable.

Discovered it purely by happenstance too. Was listening to the track "Thirteen Grand" on youtube by a group called The Wrens while doing dishes the other day. Before I had a chance to pick something else, the next song up on random autoplay was "Hideaway." It starts playing and I'm like "okay okay..." and then that outro kicks in, and I was like "ooooh, alright, we're not messing around here, I gotta do some investigating now."

Very cool. Who was the guy that wasn’t Ramin Djawadi, Tom Morello, Scott Ian, Brad Paisley, or DB Weiss?

DB’s wearing a cool Kareteka t-shirt by the way. And seems he can play guitar better than he can finish a TV series. :pop:

I'm guessing you're referring to Nuno Bettencourt? He plays/played in Extreme.

Obviously a lot of confusing inclusions on a punk/emo list. But a lot of the albums that I'm familiar with on here (and consider to be punk) I like, so will at least prompt me to look at some of the stuff i've never heard before.
