Judd Apatow produced a documentary on the Avett Brothers' recording their last album. It's on HBO and it's really good, if you're into that sort of thing.

There's a great scene where after recording a very emotional song, the crew and the other musicians congratulate the brothers for nailing the recording. Both had issues with being congratulated on something that was akin to baring their soul.

Mac Sabbath, which I guess is a McDonald or fast food parody band based on Black Sabbath songs, is coming to Mr. Smalls in a month. I'm not a big Sabbath fan, but I've certainly done worse things with $15.

Edit: Galactic Empire, which is a... you guessed it, a Star Wars-themed cover band, is opening for them.

The story about how Eruption made the album isn't totally accurate, but overall that was a good piece that has made me feel old.

For the music junkies here (I am certainly not one), looking for some suggestions...I kind of like the gospel type feel/vibe/influence of these songs:

Not true gospel (though, Just Want to See His Face is as close as they're probably gonna get), but with a certain degree of influence...any other gospel-influenced songs that aren't, ya know, actually recorded in a Southern Baptist Church that one of yous could point me towards...?

They covered the whole double album in about 30 minutes. ;). One take, as I recall.

Closest to Gospel I get is Alabama3 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane. I doubt it counts.

The whole album is fantastic, really needs to be taken in straight through to really 'get it'.

Good stuff, thanks, n!.

Today has mostly been a mix of gospel-influenced stuff by - among others - Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Eva Cassidy, Golden Gate Quartet and The Pilgrim Jubilee Singers...not at all disappointing.

My brother and sister-in-law are keeping his grandfather's piano in our home for at least a couple of years until they move out of the city, so I decided to download Yousician yesterday and start trying to learn to play. I actually already feel like I am making some progress, playing with two hands and switching between hand positions. It's still early but already feels a hell of a lot easier than learning guitar.

A gospel song:

A song that includes a gospel choir:

Also, a lot of the backup vocals and harmonies in You Want it Darker (Leonard Cohen) have a gospel vibe.

Radiohead at the Paint Can in July. (And two dates in Philly after that).

anyone ever seen radiohead live? I've always enjoyed them but I'm not much of a concert guy, but radiohead is one of the few that I would consider seeing live

I saw them the first time the played Coachella. Meh.

The band changed their sound so drastically after OK Computer; the set I saw leaned heavily on that newer repertoire, and the older stuff they played was mostly the stuff that was sonicially similar (like Karma Police). It was like a wall of ambient noise for 90 minutes. The only number that felt the least bit rock-ish was Paranoid Android.

I don't know what their shows are like now, but when I saw them in 2004 - at a crowded festival, after four hours in traffic - they did not provide an optimal rock and roll experience to this listener. YMMV.
