Dream Theater is one of those bands that has a few songs I like, some quite a bit, and then a lot of wankery.

I saw them live once, and they decided to play almost all 8+ minute songs which, sorry, gets old after awhile.
I like a lot of their material, mostly everything with Portnoy, though the last couple albums with him started tailing off in quality. But I really became a believer after seeing them on their Train of Thought tour in 2003/2004. Their Live At Budokan dvd/bluray...just one of the more utterly impressive professional quality shows you'll see. I was so happy to see that released because it was the exact same set I got to experience on that touring cycle.

Back to authentic prog...

Rocker Rick Wakeman's wild lifestyle led to three heart attacks and four wives and he lost 42 friends last year, so how is he still alive?

Did you know his son Adam is Ozzy's keyboardist and, I believe, Rick spent a bit playing with Sabbath live as well.

I saw the G3 tour in 2005-ish. Petrucci with Portnoy on drums and Dave LaRue on bass. Vai with Billy Sheehan, Tony MacAlpine, Dave Weiner. Satriani with Stu Hamm and Matt Bissonette. Special guests Dweezil Zappa and Paul Gilbert. Do not talk to me about 'wankery'.

Interesting wanking from people like Fripp and Zappa (and a few others) should be celebrated; the rest, not so much.

A run down on Bowie's (who thankfully couldn't wank) guitars:

to no surprise, the Dead Kennedys will not be reuniting but an attempt was made last week for them to play Riot Fest.

Somewhat related but Neal Morse put out a Martin Luther-inspired Prog Rock Album which features Portnoy, Gilbert, and others.

I knew Reb Beach was a Yinzer, but not Gilbert.

Playing in aesthetically appalling bands can lead to that sort of outcome. ;)

Half of the second Winger album is interesting and sort of proggy, and I can still enjoy it today. The other half is, regrettably, Miles Away.

It's too bad that Pearl Jam - and not Mudhoney - became famous.

I disagree with Bruce on many things, I'm sure, but he's an undeniably great American (and I mean that without irony)

Foo Fighters played a surprise gig and played a couple samples of new songs.
