Audio post is why I moved to CA in the first place, specifically because I wanted to ultimately get into just this kind of archival restoration. It has been a creative interest of mine since my teenage years. But this PJ stuff is pure voodoo witchcraft.I think Rubber Soul will be it, too. The technique that Giles Martin used for Revolver was developed by Peter Jackson for use in Get Back (and probably the WW1 film he made a few years ago).
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... 234587264/The new mix from Giles Martin and Sam Okell goes beyond what they did with previous deluxe editions, thanks to the “de-mixing” technology developed by the audio team led by Emile de la Rey at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd. It was devised for Get Back, to separate individual Beatle voices from the audio murk of the original film footage. Remember the scene where they cut through the cafeteria clatter to focus on John and Paul’s voices, getting emotional over George, with a microphone planted in a flowerpot? That’s what they do to Ringo’s drum kit. It sounds amazing.
As Martin explains, “There’s no one who’s getting audio even close as to what Peter Jackson’s guys can do. The funny thing, they won’t let anyone else use it — they may do eventually. But Peter’s such a big Beatles fan, he’s willing to help out. I quite like that in a way, that the Beatles are still using technologies that no one else is using. It’s really groundbreaking. The simplest way I can explain it: It’s like you giving me a cake, and then me going back to you about an hour later with flour, eggs, sugar, and all the ingredients to that cake, that all haven’t got any cake mix left on them.”
“Taxman,” for example, was famously recorded with the drums, bass, and rhythm guitar all on one track. The new tech allows separate tracks for Ringo’s kick drum, toms, hi-hats, etc. Nothing is being altered, obviously — but now we can hear more of what the lads played in the room that day. You can hear details buried way down in the mix, like the acoustic guitar in “For No One,” or the finger snaps in “Here, There, and Everywhere.”

I listened to a CD with 99 fart sounds on it this morning. Pretty good way to start the day.

The L.A. Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert starts at 7pm tonight. We were not able to score tix, and the event won't be livestreamed (I'm thinking it might be made available as a concert DVD/Bluray in the future). It promises to be pretty epic, so I'm jealous of the attendees. And I also wouldn't be at all surprised if it ends up being Foo Fighters' final concert.

I was wondering if you had managed to get tickets. I am sad you did not. I am really sad that this might be it for the Foo Fighters.

Apparently Chris Shiflett has said that while he actually hasn't been asked about Hawkins' death in interviews very much (elephant in the room), he anticipates that may change now that the tribute shows are done, and that promo work for any new FF records might be a different story. They have a greatest hits record due out in a few weeks, so maybe that's what he's talking about.I was wondering if you had managed to get tickets. I am sad you did not. YouTube clips from last night looked bananas.

I think you meant November 18. It's his dad and him playing and the first two songs released from the album are great.@eddy - new Billy Strings album on 9/18. Excited to see what gets played at the show.
Here's a little taste of fall tour, it's terrific! I'm hoping we get some "away from the shire" tunes from the Halloween run a few days earlier. Definitely wouldn't mind hearing that Fearless cover as well.

I saw Me First and the Gimme Gimmes last week and was wondering if he'd be involved with touring due to the FF's hiatus. Somehow I missed that Shiflett and the Gimmes broke things off a few years ago when they released some stuff without him.Apparently Chris Shiflett has said that while he actually hasn't been asked about Hawkins' death in interviews very much (elephant in the room), he anticipates that may change now that the tribute shows are done...I was wondering if you had managed to get tickets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_First_ ... es#HistoryOn June 7, 2019, Chris Shiflett took part in a Reddit AMA. When asked about The Gimmes he revealed he is "No longer involved", although he did not specify exactly when he left the band. He noted that "When the Gimmes decided to start releasing songs that I didn't play on it was time for me to leave", adding in another comment that it was "on bad terms".

Kirsty MacColl would have been 63 years old yesterday. She's best known for being the female singer in The Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" but wrote fabulous music in her own right, including "They Don't Know," which was a decent sized hit for Tracey Ullman in the mid-80s. She had a few albums where she collaborated with Johnny Marr, then had released a latin influenced album in 2000 when she was taken too early after being hit by a boat while swimming in Mexico.

I was in a comics shop in Bruges yesterday and they happened to play They Don't Know. That was nice.

Also, through watching stuff for the T-Hawk tributes I have become a fan of Justin Hawkins' YouTube channel, Justin Hawkins Rides Again. Fun way to spend 10-15 minutes a day in the world of music.
