Same goes for the word peruse. Not a new word for me, but I've always found Headline News' misuse of the word "factoid" to be both hilarious and sad. Hilarious because one would think a news organization would use words properly; sad because their misuse of the word has spurred many others to misuse it as well.

Old word but I just ran across the etymology: boycott.
The word boycott comes from the name of a person: Capt. Charles Cunningham Boycott. He was an English land agent (working for landowner Lord Erne) who raised rent on Irish tenants in County Mayo, Ireland. In response, the tenants and other people in the local community organized a campaign of social isolation against Boycott. Workers refused to harvest his crops, and local businesses refused to serve him. The postman even refused to deliver his mail. Boycott's name eventually came to be used as a term for what the local Irish had done to him.
