Not a new word for me, but I've always found Headline News' misuse of the word "factoid" to be both hilarious and sad. Hilarious because one would think a news organization would use words properly; sad because their misuse of the word has spurred many others to misuse it as well.

mumpsimus /ˈməmpsiməs/ muhmp-suh-muhs

1. An obstinate adherent of old ways, in spite of clear evidence of their error; an ignorant or bigoted opponent of reform
2. A traditional custom or notion obstinately adhered to although shown to be unreasonable.

The story behind this word, which the Oxford English Dictionary dates to the 16th century, was that a certain old medieval monk habitually misrecited the Latin Eucharist. Where the official text called for quod in ōre sumpsimus (“which we have taken into the mouth”), this monk would always say mumpsimus. After a time, his fellow monks corralled him, showed him the prayer book, and informed him of his error. The monk—who was illiterate and recited his prayers from memory—refused to believe his brethren or their fancy book and supposedly told them “I’m not trading in your new sumpsimus for my old mumpsimus.” That crotchety old monk gave mumpsimus its definition: an action by a person, or the person himself or herself, who adheres to a routine, idea, custom, set of beliefs, or a certain use of language even after a irrefutable demonstration that it is unreasonable or incorrect.

I am convinced this whole thread is a ploy for slappy to laugh at us plebs and our limited vocabularies.
