zooid
noun zo·oid \ˈzō-ˌȯid\

: one of the asexually produced individuals of a compound organism (as a bryozoan, hydroid, or coral colony)

yes, I found this out when looking up Portuguese man o war
The Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), also known as the Man-of-war, floating terror, or bluebottle, is a marine cnidarian of the family Physaliidae. Its venomous tentacles can deliver a painful sting. Despite its outward appearance, the Portuguese man o' war is not a common jellyfish but a siphonophore, which is not actually a single multicellular organism, but a colony of specialized minute individuals called zooids.[1] These zooids are attached to one another and physiologically integrated to the extent that they are incapable of independent survival.

Flanderization

The act of taking a single (often minor) action or trait of a character within a work and exaggerating it more and more over time until it completely consumes the character. Most always, the trait/action becomes completely outlandish and it becomes their defining characteristic. Sitcoms and Sitcom characters are particularly susceptible to this, as are peripheral characters in shows with long runs.

Not a new word, but a clarification of meaning for the word electrocute. The verb electrocute was coined in the late nineteenth century in response to the invention of the electric chair. It combined electro- with the -cute from execution, and it's meaning is "to kill using electricity" or "to die from electrical shock." It should only be used in cases where death occurred. If someone lives to tell the tale, then they've been shocked, but not electrocuted.

This may be cheating, as it is a phrase rather than a singular word, but I had never heard this one:
a busman's holiday

phrase of busman
noun: busman's holiday

1.a vacation or form of recreation that involves doing the same thing that one does at work.

Busman's holiday is from the 1800's though, has an old-timey feel to it. I dig it.

Staycation is awful.
