Summer solstice

Set my alarm for sunrise and spent nearly every second of today's daylight outside.

Including a 655am tee time in which I finished in under 3 hours and broke 90.

Drank many beers. Ate an unreal BBQ dinner.

Well fellas, here we are. Today is the winter solstice. Once again this weather is perfect for the solstice because quite frankly it stinks out there.

We are in some interesting times here on 5af. Pens maybe aren't so interesting but the Stillers, pirates and pitt are worth paying attention to.

I'm just rambling at this point, probably because I'm tired. But hey that will happen when there is less than 9 hours and 17 minutes of daylight

The accuweather long term looks good this winter.

Looks like x-mas will be the trough, a not terrible january (days in the 30's and 40's) and then spring starting at the back half of february.

As much as I hate the short days during the winter, my brother in law is moving to Finland next year and will have 3.5 hours of daylight on this day next year. Kill me now.

I think we need to revisit the weather thread circa April/May this year. Lots of wringing of hands and wailing that it wasn't 70 degrees and sunny every day.

It's typical of Pittsburgh: you'll get the onesie twosie 60/70 degree day in March/April, and all of a sudden people think winter is over. It's not until early to mid-May before we can kiss the cold weather goodbye.

I guess it all depends on what your definition of spring is.

I'm 47. I never used to have issues with it, but I think I really do now have Seasonal Affective disorder. The cold has never really bothered me but the constant gray is just really wearing on my mental state. My sleep has been garbage, my anxiety is through the roof, and I flip between malaise and depression. Sigh. I guess I gotta start googling therapy lamps?

Spring yearning begins 2/15. You get the odd nice day where I can go outside and start yard prep. I start some seeds inside.

"Spring" for me is about 3/15, Temps start flirting with the 50s, I start checking forecasts for potential golf days, etc.

You still get some bullshit weather or a snow storm between 3/15 and 4/15.

4/15-5/15 is full Spring. Golf as much as possible. Be outside as much as possible. Yard work, first mow, etc. You'll get a day or two of BS freezing Temps but power thru.

5/15 starts summer for me. Plants go in the ground and I create full mindset shift.

I've struggled with it for a while. Was never an noticeable issue until I was in the Navy and would be stuck inside a power plant on a 7 to 7 shift, which meant showing up at 6 and leaving at 8, and would go a week without seeing sunlight. It's never been as bad as it was then (being in the military definitely contributed to the general malaise lol), but this time of year has been rough for me for the past decade. I started taking Vitamin D supplements last year and have noticed significantly less SAD this year compared to previous years. If you're not already taking Vitamin D, I would suggest trying that before investing in a therapy lamp (which look like they can be pricey), but my experience is that anything to help boost Vitamin D levels will help.

I started supplementation year as well and it did indeed seem to help. How much do you take a day? And do you stop when it's nice out again?

Yeah, my doc put me on vitamin D last year. I told him I golf and hike and kayak and blah blah blah. He said even roofers in SWPA need it. I take it year round.

I had SAD when I was in my early 20s. I joined the military to get away from PA and it helped, I ended up being stationed on the coast in NC. I don't like living here in mid-life but the positive of living near my parents and other family outweighs the grey skies, for now.
