I don't mind spice, so I would probably be adventurous. It's just one of those things where neither of us have had it or even directly knows someone who has.

well curries are usually made up of something like this:

cumin
cardamom
coriander
cloves
cinnamon
garlic
ginger

if this doesn't scare you, go eat inidian. it is really really good.

Might take some convincing for the missus, but I'll give it a shot.

I'd suggest getting a can of tikka masala sauce from the grocery store, making it w/ chicken and see if you like it. tikka masala is basically a gateway drug to indian food

Speaking of Indian food, a recipe for Masoor Dal (Spiced Red Lentils) popped up in my Twitter feed last night: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/751 ... &smtyp=cur

Sounds like something I can make a big batch and freeze in portions for lunch.

I want to get a nicer set of pots and pans for my wife for her birthday. She's been wanting the Calphalon space saver set but I think there are probably other (better) options. Is Calphalon the gold standard? I've also had an eye on All Clad too. The only thing I really want is dishwasher safe and preferably non stick.

Hmm... the stone/steel on the top rack intrigues me. I always read to have it on the bottom rack, but now that I google a few spots, some suggest the top rack. Might have to to do some experimenting of my own. Thanks for the link.

Basmati rice, yes.

But it's not going to be as good as the restaurant. Go spend the 20-30 bucks and pick up a double order of tikka masala. enough f***ing around.

i have expensive-ish pots and pans (top bed bath & beyond quality) and i can't tell the difference between cooking with them and cooking with cheap ones. i am a bad resource.

bad take imo. we are grownups here and we all know that stuff from a can most likely will be inferior to a restaurant. but if the canned stuff doesn't suit one's taste buds, the more robust stuff from a restaurant may be a disaster.

In that tikka masala and butter chicken were invented in the U.K....sort of.

so the BAD take is the one that thinks that sauce in a jar is less palatable than sauce from a trained chef.

Just go get a frozen chicken tikka masala from Trader Joes to give it a try. It's on par with what you'll get in a typical indian restaurant and you'll have an idea if you like the taste.

BTW... of all indian food, I've never heard of someone trying chicken tikka masala and thinking it's disgusting. It's about as tame as you can get.

actually, scratch that. look up the wikipedia on every ingredient, learn how to harvest yourself, experiment by mixing tomatoes with one ingredient at a time. wait 2 weeks after each ingredient to make sure there are no residual effects. do all this instead of just going to an interesting new restaurant. THE STAKES ARE TOO HIGH DAMMIT!!!!
