The only thing that frustrates me is that this team refuses to get below .500. This might get them into the playoffs, but it's yet to be seen.

Last year's team made the playoffs with horrible play calling and historically bad QB play. Assuming both are better this year, and the defense is just as solid, they should easily be a playoff team.

in terms of KSPs performance, this is a low investment to put some pressure on him to really see if he can be future of this team. its immaterial to the trajectory of the team because tomlin is the player whisperer so itll be good

Right. I don't think this moves the needle either way. They probably hover around .500 and back into the expanded playoffs again.
But it doesn't solve anything either. It just delays the franchise QB hunt for another year or more.

Which was already going to be happening this year with baby hands back there.

Well it's not about winning, it's about trying to solidify the QB position. This kicks the can down the road for another few years potentially.

But, again, I would also state that I care more about winning in the playoffs, I don't care about regular season wins unless it gets us to the playoffs, and we measure the team on what they do there. You know, the old Steelers way. I don't think the Steelers have any QB that can do that yet.

I will say though, this should end the "KP is our starter" nonsense even after this year. Wilson didn't come to be a back-up, so KP better get comfortable learning how to be an NFL QB, to become a career backup.

Yup. I think I'm most annoyed that I don't get to see the entire staff try and elevate KSP into a starting role. If nothing else it was going to be entertaining on so many levels; particularly as his fans run out of excuses. Now there is this entire other sideshow that has no upside at all.

Mason **** Rudloph nearly willed this team to beat Buffalo in the wild card. They weren't that far off. Wilson playing somewhat decent could get them a playoff W.

Is Russ gonna make them a SB contender? I don't see it...

Probably not, but give him a season away from Canada and see what you have. If he stinks, so be it. Now they have a high draft pick to go get a potential franchise QB for cheap, and they will hopefully have a capable oline that can keep him upright.

To me, signing Russ just says they are okay playing .500 football with no future plan to find a franchise QB. Russ ain't it and KP likely ain't it either.

Kenny shouldn't have been elevated to the starter in '22. But Mitch was so obscenely bad the team was forced to turn to Pickett. So I think this all boils down to a few questions, the situation is currently terrible, but it probably would not be this bad if it weren't for the below.

1. How was Canada ever allowed to be the OC?
2. How was Trubisky brought in ahead of Rudolph in the first place?
3. Why did the organization completely give up on Rudolph?
4. Why was Trubisky brought back for a second year?

The why/how did this happen really makes one wonder.

We've seen enough of Rudolph to know that his ceiling is backup QB. That's fine and definitely fills a need but he's just not a starter. I have no answer for why Trubisky stuck around.

I hope so, because all this does is push the "next Steelers franchise QB" down the road more.

I'm seeing this a lot, but unless they were willing to mortgage the draft to climb and take one of the top 3 QBs this year, or unless you thought starting KP was going to result in a 2-15 season, I just don't see how this 'kicks the can' anywhere. What were their other options to expedite solidifying the QB position this year?

I think a lot of people are just ignoring the fact that Russ is a pretty, pretty good QB. He's a upgrade over what they've had over the last, what, 4 years? He's at his best with a good running game, and can also create with his legs. He can also throw the ball downfield, and seems really good off of play action.

I know he's weird. Of course if he starts winning here I'm sure that'll change to 'eccentric'.

I'm sure he is an upgrade over the statistically worst QB in the modern era, yes.

What's more likely? Them finding their QB like SF or PHI did or how the Bills/Bengals did? I am sure it's the former, they have to keep building up the trenches and likely start drafting projects to develop.

For the Steelers, it's more likely they find it in the former - but it's even less likely that they find a franchise QB in that position too.

At least the Steelers have a HoF QB again.

One year deal, no player option has me sold. It makes the QB room cheaper for probably at worst similar production to last year. Should allow to spend on other positions.

Do I love that they got Russ, nah. But I love the contract.

There's practically zero risk to that contract. If he sucks, then he sits. If he cries about sitting, then you cut him.
