Why? You have a whole thread for people that think Pitt is a good basketball team but I can't opine about the Steelers starting QB?

What's the point of any of this?

I have no problem with some QB competition, but signing a bad QB who is known to be a locker room cancer is a bad move.

I hope Russ is primarily the backup next year, but I think he'll throw a fit if he loses to KP in training camp.

I can't imagine a world where Wilson would even be open to taking a meeting with a team that wasn't essentially guaranteeing him QB1. (Obviously you can play yourself out of a job)

Off the field Wilson is the guy version of a Stepford Wife who will soon own the distinction of being the first player to be paid $100 million by two different teams to not play for them. But on the field he's a marked improvement. Even in the midst of all the noise, all the drama, all the organizational buffoonery in DEN...... and he's cheaper; I think the Steelers are actually saving money.

Tomlin has shown an ability to manage 'crazy' in the past, maybe he can make this work.

Downside: A lather-rinse-repeat of 2010 - 2023 + lots of extracurricular drama, 9 wins, another year of elite studs on D burned up, "[Tomlinism]", etc

Upside: A Super Bowl champ HOF level talent getting paid out of someone else's bank account plays to....... let's call it 85% of what he did last year, on a roster with game breakers on both sides

I would argue that downside scenario was in the cards w Pickett, anyway.

Now they need to draft a QB, and it’ll be one hell of a locker room situation.

If nothing else this will make the season more interesting in a trainwreck kind of way.

This is hilarious. Nothing says “Kenny is our guy” like signing Russell Wilson.

It’s gonna be infuriating when he’s benched after 6 games and the Steelers are unsure on what to do at QB again in 2025

I can’t tell if this is overstating how bad Russ is, or understating how bad Pickett is?

I think Russ stinks and isn’t going to improve the Steelers dramatically over KP. So all they are doing is kicking the can down the road. There’s a chance they literally have no QBs on the roster next year if they don’t pick up KPs fifth year

I'm still processing that this actually happened, but tif's last sentence here is probably the key for me. It's not like KP is some sure thing to improve over what we've seen him do to this point. Russ is very likely to play at a level that we'd hope Kenny could reach this year, and if the window's closing on defense then immediately upgrading the QB position (instead of hoping KP hits his potential) is probably the best move. It's low risk/high reward...and it's cheap. It shouldn't prevent any other free agent moves, meaning you can still improve around him.

I don't know. I can't say I love it. He's definitely a weird dude. But go watch a highlight video of his from even last year. You'll see 20 throws that I don't think KP can (or is willing to) make at this point in his career.

I believe the official dk take is that the signing is “so so stupid”.

In case anyone was looking for validation that this is a smart move.

Pickett couldn’t finish three games last year, his lack of durability alone makes him suited for a back up role in the long run. They are in qb hell right now, this doesn’t change that. But it does stabilize the position for ‘24.

No matter what, they were not asking the qb to win them games next year. Ultimately it’s just hoping that mahomes gets hurt for any chance at making a Super Bowl. But it at least move the floor up, because Russ is not good, but at least an nfl quarterback. Pickett would often not look like an nfl qb last year.

I would have liked to see Pickett with a non-canada offense. But I get it, jobs are on the line and you gotta do what you gotta do. I just wish it wasn't Russ. He's such a a loser

I try to avoid most nfl soap opera discussion. Is Wilson just a wierdo? Really vain? A little bit of everything?

Also, this is a good time to remind everyone that it was like 20 years between the end of the Bradshaw era and the start of the Big Ben era. So we have like 17 more years of this sht

I remember some weird stuff about how in that SB loss to the Patriots, there was sentiment that they threw from the 1 yard line (even though Lynch would have definitely scored a TD) was that for whatever reason, they wanted Russ to be the hero and not Lynch.

Or maybe I just invented that, or that was just how the chatter was processing the fact that it was one of the worst choke jobs in SB history.

Really bums me out that the Pittsburgh team that's most stable with the brightest upside right now is the Pirates.

We know that Dodint's is fake optimism.

But seeing Cruz, Hayes, and Davis mash this spring is genuinely encouraging.
