Mrs Tif's mom passed away overnight. They were estranged for many decades (there was even discussion about whether or no to invite her to our wedding ten years ago), so her passing is more weird and awkward than it is sad in our house. But the whole thing is prompting a fair bit of introspection. My dad died a few years ago, but I literally had zero relationship with him, so it was abstract (my mom told me about it via text). This is the first of our parents to die where there was an actual relationship and connection with the person, albeit one that had eroded to next to nothing some time ago.

My condolences, tif. For what it's worth, estrangement is more common than people think:

Thanks for that share, Tico. That was an interesting read, and backs up a lot of the anecdotal stuff Mrs Tif has told me about. (And to a lesser extent, my own experience with my family)

Tom Petty‘s family has revealed the iconic rocker died of an accidental drug overdose.

In a statement posted on the late singer’s website Friday evening, his family said the 66-year-old had been using a number of medications, including opioid pain medication Fentanyl.

Petty died of “multi-system organ failure” caused by “mixed drug toxicity,” according to the autopsy report, released on Friday by the Los Angeles County Coroner. During an examination on Oct. 3, the medical examiner found fentanyl, oxycodone, temazepam, alprazolam, citalopram, acetylfentanyl and despropionyl fentanyl. Petty was also suffering from coronary artery atherosclerosis and emphysema.
That’s a helluva lot of painkillers.

The family said he’d learned that his hip was completely broken the day he died, and that he was trying to combat the immense amount of pain involved with that (and bad knees as well).

Speaking of fentanyl...
"Lead Singer of the Cranberries Dolores O'Riordan died of Fentanyl poisoning Monday, said a source in the London Police Department. Authorities found counterfeit fentanyl near the 46 years old rocker's bed.

"The source added that an official cause of death will probably have to wait for a toxicology report. He added that suicide and a deliberate overdose are suspected."

Namesake of the Bocuse d'Or competition. Difficult to quantify his impact on the world of fine dining; he practically invented nouvelle cuisine.
