All this puts me in mind of a story I tell
I went to a Catholic parochial school and man, how the nuns would pound the 'never take our lords' name in vain' ****. None of us knew what 'in vain' even meant. I ask my father and he says something like 'you can't say Jesus's name unless you're in church or if a nun says it's ok' Anyway, we're all of us collecting baseball cards. 5 in a pack, stick of gum- 5 cents. We're flipping them, trading them, cherishing them. I had shoe-boxes full. One day I open a pack and there's...JESUS Alou. No ****, I was astounded! How could this be? I go over to my best friend Don's house and show him the card and it blows his mind too.
When the Giants come to town we're listening to the Gunner and Possum on KDKA...waiting for this guy to come to bat who is -as far as we're concerned- a walking talking mortal sin. He's taking the lords name in vain. Doesn't he know he's going to hell? When he steps to the plate we're wondering 'Is the Gunner about to take the lord's name in vain too? We don't want the Gunner to go to hell. How relieved we were when Prince says 'Hay-soos Alou steps in...' 'He didn't do it, he didn't take the lord's name in vain'! The Gunner isn't going to hell!!! Me and Don, we were so happy. How frkkn innocent were we? Dang.
Here's another brief aside about those days. For a good while we thought there were two Clemente's on the Pirates. Nobody had bothered to tell us that Bobby was the diminutive of Roberto : ) There were no Bobby's in the neighborhood and the nuns never used diminutives.

TUKWILA, Wash. (WWMT) — The inspiration for one of the world’s most recognizable characters died at the age of 84.
Mario Arnold Segale once owned the business park that warehoused the Nintendo of America arcade operations in Washington and is credited by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario Bros., as being the inspiration for the character’s name.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/02/obit ... mario.htmlMario A. Segale, a Seattle-area real estate developer who unwittingly lent his name to perhaps the most famous video game character in history — Nintendo’s Mario — died at a local hospital on Oct. 27. He was 84.
In his book “Game Over: How Nintendo Conquered the World,” David Sheff wrote that a small company team had gathered in the warehouse one day and was struggling to come up with American names for the characters in the arcade game Donkey Kong. They were stuck on the character of a squat carpenter wearing a red cap when there was a knock on the door.
It was Mr. Segale, who had come to berate Minoru Arakawa, then the president of Nintendo of America, for being past due on the rent.
Mr. Arakawa was already under great pressure to succeed, and Mr. Segale “blasted him” in front of everyone, Mr. Sheff wrote. A flustered Mr. Arakawa vowed that Mr. Segale would get his money soon.
And as soon as he left, Mr. Sheff wrote, the team knew it had its name: “Super Mario!”
