Capt. Alfred C. "Al" Haynes, the pilot of United Airlines Flight 232, at age 87. Flight 232 was the DC-10 that lost its flight controls after an uncontained failure in the tail engine severed all three of the aircraft's hydraulic systems. In a feat of collective airmanship that demonstrated the value of the then-relatively-new concept of crew resource management, Captain Haines and his crew managed to steer the aircraft to a crash landing on a runway at Souix City from which 184 of the 296 people aboard survived. RIP Captain.
RIP
The tail engine had a fan failure due to an undetected crack. The shrapnel from the disintegrating fan cut the lines for all three of the DC-10's hydraulic systems, and the only remaining way to control the aircraft was to vary the thrust of the two remaining wing engines. In addition to the three-member crew, (Captain Haynes, First Officer Roy Records, and Second Officer/Flight Engineer Dudley Dvorak), Captain Dennis Fitch—who was a United training captain for the DC-10—just happened to be onboard as a passenger, and he joined the cockpit crew after the accident. It was Captain Fitch who mostly handled the throttles to steer the aircraft. That they made the Souix City field at all is remarkable and a testament to everyone's skill. When United later ran other expert pilots through a simulation of the accident, most crews didn't even come anywhere close to any airfield, and none of them were able to produce a better landing.

Ehh.

Agreed.
I would argue the second most influential automotive executive to pass this year.

Piëch was the major driver behind the VW group becoming the major force that it is today, and one must admit that he got the job done and was a major influence in the automotive industry. He also, from everything I've read, was a real ruthless SOB, and I have to imagine there are a lot of people whose toes Piëch stepped on at one point or another who probably aren't all that sorry to see his passing. He strikes me as being the sort of person that is very difficult to like, but much easier to respect. RIP.

Unlikely since records have to be set in two passes. I'm part of a group thinking about going out there and doing some runs next year. I have an SCTA rulebook on my desk.

For yinz in Central Pennsylvania, Rick Geist passed away. He represented Altoona in the PA House for 34 years.
Also, bodybuilder Franco Columbu passed away. He was a very, very close friend of Arnold, and had cameos in The Terminator and Conan The Barbarian. Columbu was an absolute legend of the bodybuilding world, and was just as big as Arnold back in the 70s. This was him in Pumping Iron:
Arnold had a very sweet tribute to him on Reddit today.

RIPIn his book Coming On Strong, he recalled a time where he and Arnold Schwarzenegger were hanging out and Arnold saw a donkey. Being the character Arnold was, he told Franco to pick up the donkey. Franco picked it up with ease and they walked around while Arnold would yell "Look at my friend's ass."

In lieu of flowers, send donations to a hunger charity. That's on point for a competitive eater.
