I thought I saw on Reddit that Russell was a distant relative, but can't find anything elsewhere that backs that up.

RIP Lt. Col. Dick Cole, the last living Doolittle Raider, at age 103. Cole was James Doolittle’s co-pilot in the No. 1 bomber during the 1942 raid to strike Japan, which saw 16 stripped-down B-25B Mitchell bombers launch from the USS Hornet on a mission to bomb Tokyo.

It's still heart-in-mouth stuff watching the film of those first three or four Mitchells taking off. (I mean..... spoiler alert...)

Yeah, I heard of his death on NPR while driving today. It got my heart rate up. What audacity...

Seriously, does anyone have balls like that anymore?

I remember listening to him talk about how after their bombing run, they went very low to avoid flak. They had close-up views of the Imperial City, the moat, etc. Like, holy sht. Nerves of steel.

Great newsreel footage

Just insane that their mission, by necessity, involved bailing out over and near Manchukuo. The footage of them being honored by Soong Mei-Ling is pretty awesome too. The US and China grew quite close prior to 1949.

RIP Earl Thomas Conley, one of the biggest country stars of the 1980s. He had a big influence on the guys that came after him.

We haven’t had many notable celeb deaths this year.

Too many personal ones though.

I don't follow country much but I recognize that name.

Did he have a bunch of commercials in the 80s or early 90s?

As an aside; 'Taste of Country' is not a good name for anything.

Like, holy sht. Nerves of steel.
Even more so when you factor in they launched like half a day earlier than planned, 200 miles further away from the target. It meant they launched believing they'd run out of gas at night over the Sea of Japan. The only reason they made landfall over China after the raid was an unforecasted tail wind after they dropped. They took off essentially thinking it was a no-come-back mission.

Was out and about yesterday and decided to check out the Rams' new stadium, which was neat. But then I found myself at Slauson and Crenshaw in the middle of Nipsey Hussle celebrations. That was pretty crazy, probably over 1,000 people at the corner strip mall where his store is licated.
