RIP the 54 yokozuna, Wajima Hiroshi, at age 70 due to complications of throat cancer. Wajima was one of the rare sumo wrestlers who never adopted a shikona or ring name; Wajima was his actual family name. He was also the only yokozuna to graduate from college before turning pro. Active from the early 70s to early 80s, Wajima was the main rival of fellow yokozuna Kitanoumi in the 70s, and he won 14 top-division championships to Kitanoumi's 24. After retiring from the ring, Wajima served for a time as a stablemaster under the Hanakago name, but he was forced to resign from the Sumo Association after it was discovered that he had put up his share in the Sumo Association as collateral for a loan (a expressly forbidden practice), which Wajima had taken out in relation to a failing restaurant side business. In order to pay off his debts, Wajima then went into Japanese professional wrestling. He was persona non grata with the Sumo Association for many years (think Pete Rose and baseball), but in the last few years the ban was rescinded and Wajima even appeared as a commentator on the NHK sumo broadcasts. Wajima was known for his throwing techniques, especially with his left arm, and yokozuna Hakuhō has cited Wajima as a major influence on his own wrestling style. Hakuhō even occasionally dons a gold loincloth (Wajima's trademark color) when on regional tour.

Several friends are ex-MSFT employees, and they are all 'feeling sad' now.

"Whether through business, indulging in their hobbies, or via philanthropic ventures, few people have had as large of an effect on their hometown as Paul G. Allen."

Fair winds, guy. I'd like to someday be in the position to hire Frank Gehry to design the hobby museum I'm personally bankrolling.

RIP... Dude was definitely a visionary. Fun fact. When he was first diagnosed with cancer in 1982, Gates tried to clandestinely shut him out of the company. Allen's memoir was an interesting read.

RIP John Ziegler, former NHL commissioner president from 1977 to 1992.
“The NHL family was saddened to learn of the passing of former League President John Ziegler,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “From 1977 until 1992, as just the fourth president in NHL history, John oversaw the growth of the League from 18 to 24 teams, including the 1979 addition of four teams from the WHA. He was instrumental in the NHL’s transition to becoming a more international League — during his tenure, the share of European-born players in the NHL grew from 2 to 11%, players from the former Soviet Union first entered the League and games between NHL and European Clubs became a nearly annual tradition.

“On a personal note, John provided invaluable counsel during my early days as commissioner and was always generous with his time. His life of service to our game was recognized in 1984 with the awarding of the Lester Patrick Trophy and in 1987 with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On behalf of the NHL’s Board of Governors, we extend our deepest sympathies to his entire family and many friends.”

Sounds like old Whitey didn't leave this mortal coil via natural causes.

I was amused they described his head as "dented" as if it were a car door.

I was amused they described his head as "dented" as if it were a car door.
There was a montage of local Boston news broadcasts featuring on-camera quotes from surviving family members of people Bulger had killed over the years. It was all a variation of, "Good, he deserved to go out in a painful, ugly way." The frankness of it was kind of refreshing.

there was another quote from a survivor that was something along the lines of "where he's going, the devil will be poking him in the ass with his pitchfork."

found it:
And Tommy Donahue, whose father, Michael, was among the 11 murder victims linked to the notorious South Boston mob moss, said his immediate reaction was elation.

“I grew up going to Catholic school,” Tommy Donahue said. “It just brings me a lot of joy knowing that for the rest of his life, he’ll be getting a pitchfork in his ass from the devil himself to eternity.”
