Last thing: nobody did a better job than Bourdain of showing that the world is made up of *people* and not cartoon Others. And once you internalize that, it becomes a million times harder to stomach this stupid, destructive, tribal, political thing we keep doing to each other.

Sucks...

NPR had a really bad back to back stories on his passing this morning. They pretty much said he committed suicide and then "In a suicide bombing". My brain was still on the Bourdain thing when they said that and I was like "wait... waaaaaaat?"

Wow. What the **** man. The dude always seemed like he had his share of personal demons, but this is completely unexpected. I just read an interview with him the other day where he said he wants to "die in the saddle". 11 year old daughter with his most recent ex-wife.

Edit:
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.
Just terrible. Something needs to change.

She was one of the first to accuse Weinstein, no?

Yes, she was. She has been on Parts Unknown a few times as well, and I think she was there in France with him.

Heroin and then cocaine. He kicked both habits a while ago.

There are a lot of psychotropic drugs being prescribed out there and psychiatrists that depend on them as the central point of treatment. In a lot of cases, the drugs can help for stabilization, but in other cases they end up doing a lot of mixing and matching. The problem is that when these patients are going on and off the drugs, they require supervision, access to mental health treatment is expensive and there is obviously a correlation between requiring strong medication and not being able to maintain steady employment. So I can easily see folks struggling with medication induced mania falling victim to suicide.

It's really the strongest argument for a comprehensive social welfare system that includes healthcare. I think we love to get wrapped up in the bootstaps argument, and the food stamp abusers, but the reason that people need access to health care and subsistence relief is due to mental health and the difficulty those with that condition have supporting themselves.

Completely broken up by this news. It is no exaggeration to say Bourdain was one of the most influential people in my life over the last 15 years: so many of our travel adventures were guided by his insights. Casa de Tif is weapy this morning, for sure.

That said, I have a bad feeling about this. If you've ever read Kitchen Confidential, it is not exactly a huge leap to go from the debauchery he openly talks about to a #metoo avalanche. Given his recent very vocal public support of his GF Asia Argento and her campaign against Harvey Weinstein, I can only hope my concern is wildly misplaced paranoia.

The current season of Parts Unknown opened in West Virginia, and his intro remarks straight up acknowledged his biases and preconceptions. It ended up being one of the best pieces of television he had ever done because he approached it from that 'people' perspective, and employed viewers to do the same.

After the Ronan Farrow piece ran, she was one of the first to publicly make an outright rape allegation.

She directed the most recent episode of Parts Unknown, in Hong Kong.

As if I wasn't bummed enough this morning, I just opened the Facebook today and the first thing I see is Ovechkin raising the goddamn Stanley Cup.
