RIP
So I was sitting here today thinking about my mom. I'm working through all of this grief the best way I know how. I have a great support system (especially my wife), but there are days where I feel I need more. Are there therapists for this stuff?
Like today I'm sitting here thinking that its my birthday next week, but that it's almost my mom's 4 days later...and her birthday falls on mothers day this year. It like teetered me over the edge today.

Yes, there are absolutely therapists to help with this. My wife got a lot of benefit from it when her parents passed away.

Also, it's not really something that will 'fix' your grief but it might help you understand it. @meow of all people turned me on to it and I'll be damned if the 'Grief as a Shrinking Ball in a Box" analogy hasn't helped me a ton. What you're feeling is okay and it will get better, even if it never goes away.

therapists can definitely help (though there are bad therapists too so you kind of have to get lucky)So I was sitting here today thinking about my mom. the grieving process is healthy and natural. I haven't lost my mom so I can't relate to that feeling specifically, but honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with being overwhelmed with sadness because of your mom's bday falling on mother's day. you have a wound and it needs time to heal and that's completely fine. sadness is an important emotion
I think a therapist can help if you feel like your sadness is affecting your day to day or if you have unhealthy coping mechanisms (like drug abuse or something)

if you work for a company, most likely they offer an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). There have been times where I took advantage of mine. Typically the way they work is that HR contracts with a provider to set up with counseling sessions in times of personal crisis. Usually 5 or so and they are paid for the program.
I was super hesitant to go to a therapist, but I found it really rewarding in the end, even if its just someone to talk to. Just helps to have a 3rd party perspective. take advantage if you able.

Thank you everyone. I think my work does have an EAP program so maybe ill look into that to see if there is someone to talk to, or seek out a local grief counselor.

Yup, don't have to overthink it or worry about finding the "right" person. Sometimes just a willing ear helps. Good luck bud.Thank you everyone. I think my work does have an EAP program so maybe ill look into that to see if there is someone to talk to, or seek out a local grief counselor.

Lots of times just totally unloading on someone is all that is needed.

therapists can be hit or miss but I’m so happy about the one I’m seeing now. when you get a therapist that will listen to all your bullshit it’s amazing. she’s genuinely really smart too and is wonderfully helping me navigate my emotions
also she’s pretty cute. I may have picked to have a first appointment with her because of that
